Chan Thinh promotes the development of sustainable commodity agriculture

After the merger, Chan Thinh commune entered a new development phase with many opportunities and challenges. On the solid foundation of new rural areas, the Party Committee of the commune determined that the development of agricultural and forestry commodities is the main direction, in accordance with natural conditions and market demand. Promoting concentrated production, forming specialized areas and linking product consumption are opening up a direction for sustainable agricultural development, improving people's lives.

Comrade Pham Thai Son - Party Secretary of the commune (wearing a hat) visited the cinnamon purchasing facility of Mr. Dao Van Viet's family, Chua 1 village.

During the 2020 - 2025 term, the agriculture of the three communes before the merger achieved important results: total grain output reached over 8,460 tons, the main livestock herd was nearly 28,400 heads, the output of fresh meat for slaughter was over 5,000 tons, an increase of 35% compared to 2020. Specialized areas were initially formed, including 580 hectares of raw tea, 555 hectares of oranges, 79 hectares of mulberry, 67 hectares of Bat Do bamboo shoots, 67 hectares of aquaculture area, and a forest cover rate of 65.1%.

These results show that the local agricultural potential is huge, but it is still scattered, small-scale, and lacks linkage. From that reality, Chan Thinh commune determined that restructuring agriculture and forestry towards commodities, chain linkage, linking production with processing and consumption markets is an inevitable path.

According to comrade Truong Manh Quyet - Chairman of the People's Committee of Chan Thinh commune, the commune's consistent orientation is to reorganize agricultural production, develop specialized areas associated with VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, gradually issue growing area codes, and trace the origin of products.

We aim to bring the average income per capita to 70 million VND/year, the poverty rate to 1.8% by 2030; by 2028, strive to achieve advanced new rural standards.

From that orientation, the commune has reviewed land funds, soil conditions and sub-climate zones to form concentrated production areas according to value chains. This is considered an important initial step to transform agriculture from "fragmented" to "linked", creating momentum for new economic models.

Chan Thinh commune has formed a bamboo growing area of nearly 70 hectares.

In the coming time, Chan Thinh commune will form specialized areas according to the value chain suitable for each ecological sub-region: Orange growing area of 120 hectares in Ke, Bang La 2, Khe Sung, Khe Nhu, Dong Bang villages; mulberry growing area for silkworm raising of about 25 hectares in Dong Bang, Dong Queo, Khe Nhu villages, in addition to the existing 31 hectares of mulberry in Bo village; high-quality raw tea area of 30 hectares in Khe Sung, Ke, along with the existing 580 hectares of tea; clean vegetable area of 6 hectares or more in Dat Quang, Ao Lay.

These areas not only create large-scale commodity products but also help communes easily deploy synchronous techniques, attract businesses to invest and consume products.

Along with the planning, the good news is that Chan Thinh people have quickly caught up with new production thinking, converting to crops and livestock with high economic value and gradually forming linkage chains.

People in Chan Thinh commune grow oranges organically, bringing high economic efficiency.

In Kien Thinh 2 village, Mr. Tran Thanh Tung is one of the pioneers in growing oranges organically. His family currently has 6 hectares of oranges, of which more than 2 hectares have been harvested, earning nearly 700 million VND/year.

“We take care of our orange garden biologically, minimizing chemical pesticides, composting fish manure and composted manure for fertilization. In particular, we proactively contact traders and promote our products through images and videos for convenient consumption,” said Mr. Tung.

Following that success, the mulberry growing and silkworm raising model of Tan Thinh Cooperative, directed by Ms. Hoang Thi Huong, is also expanding strongly. With 32 hectares of mulberry and more than 30 member households, the Cooperative harvests an average of 400 kg of cocoons per month, providing stable supply to businesses.

"The sericulture profession is not noisy but brings a steady income, suitable for rural workers" - Ms. Huong shared.

Along with cultivation, the commune focuses on developing commercial livestock farming, aiming to form a closed chain. By 2030, the total herd of large livestock is expected to reach 5,500, along with high-quality breeding pig models and poultry following VietGAP farming standards. Typically, the two farms of Japfa Company in Lan village have become models in applying techniques and managing safe epidemics.

High value aquaculture brings economic efficiency

In addition, aquaculture is also encouraged in the direction of high value, with specialties such as soft-shell turtles and snails, raising the average income to 350 million VND/ha/year, many times higher than traditional farming.

Chan Thinh commune focuses on semi-industrial livestock farming.

Currently, medium and large scale livestock models in Chan Thinh commune are showing clear effectiveness. Previously, Mr. Nguyen Manh Tinh's family in Trung Tam village raised livestock on a small scale in the traditional way and the barns were also makeshift. However, in recent years, thanks to support in capital, science, technology, and disease prevention, Mr. Tinh has boldly invested in concentrated semi-industrial livestock farming, bringing high profits.

"In my barn, there are always more than ten commercial buffaloes. Compared to small-scale farming like before, concentrated farming reduces labor, facilitates barn cleaning and ensures safety against epidemics. In the future, my family will continue to build more barns to increase the herd, contributing to increasing family income," said Mr. Ha.

From the above reality, Chan Thinh commune determined that in order to develop long-term, it is necessary to have a clear value chain link and synchronous application of science and technology. In the new term, the commune will implement the project to develop the key economic model for the period 2025 - 2030; encourage the establishment of new-style cooperatives, in each field: growing oranges, mulberry, bamboo shoots, and raising livestock. At the same time, promote connections, attract businesses to invest in processing systems and consume agricultural products, especially tea and Bat Do bamboo shoots.

At the same time, Chan Thinh promotes digital transformation in agriculture, instructs farmers to keep electronic records, production diaries, and participate in e-commerce platforms to promote and consume products and connect to markets.

"In the coming time, the commune will build an information channel to provide information on production, market, policies, and improve vocational skills for farmers; connect with teams of experts, market analysts, and high-quality agricultural human resources to train people; research mechanisms and policies to encourage investment and link agricultural development; create favorable conditions for businesses and cooperatives to invest in agriculture and deeply process local strengths... " - Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune Truong Manh Quyet emphasized.

Developing agriculture according to the value chain not only helps to improve economic efficiency but also aims at green, circular, and environmentally friendly agriculture. The commune encourages people to use organic fertilizers and biological products; manage waste in livestock and aquaculture; and classify waste at source. All households participating in production are trained in techniques and disseminated safe farming processes, aiming at VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

Chan Thinh commune established a point to introduce and sell OCOP products.

Promoting the role of farmers as the main subject, Chan Thinh has determined the long-term goal of building a large-scale, highly competitive agricultural commodity area, closely linking production - processing - consumption. By 2030, the commune strives to have at least 7 OCOP products achieving 3 stars or more, in which priority is given to developing key products such as: oranges, tea, mulberry, Bat Do bamboo shoots and specialty seafood... products that have been and are affirming their brands in the market.

Silkworm farming brings stable income to people in the commune.

It can be seen that from small-scale, fragmented production, Chan Thinh is gradually forming a commodity agriculture, associated with the construction of advanced new rural areas. When people change their thinking, the government has the right direction and businesses and cooperatives join together, then agriculture will not only be a livelihood but also a foundation for the comprehensive development of the locality.

“Developing commodity agriculture not only creates momentum for economic growth, but also makes an important contribution to building Chan Thinh into an advanced new rural commune by 2028,” affirmed comrade Truong Manh Quyet.
