Dao man starts his business by growing mushrooms

Small, tall and somewhat thin, with a strong "Dao" accent, and especially the agile style of Mr. Dang Van Binh, Director of Binh Phu Agricultural - Forestry and Service Cooperative (headquartered in Lam Sinh village, Khanh Yen commune, Lao Cai province) made us feel good right away when we met him.

Visiting the facilities of this cooperative whose main business is mushroom production, we were surprised by the systematic and scientific arrangement of the mushroom growing areas. The place where raw materials are ground to serve the purpose of making pots for mushroom spawn cultivation, the place where mushroom spawn is grown, the place where commercial mushrooms are grown… are all neat, tidy and very clean.

After a few words, Mr. Dang Van Binh told us about the first days of starting an economic activity (which people now often call “starting a business”) with the mushroom growing model. The reason he chose to grow mushrooms is because of the high economic efficiency, suiting his interests and personality, especially taking advantage of the abundant and cheap organic raw materials from local agricultural production such as straw, sawdust, etc.

After a period of research, learning about techniques and building factories and camps, in 2014, he officially started growing mushrooms. At that time, Lam Sinh village belonged to Liem Phu commune - a commune in the particularly difficult area of Van Ban district, Lao Cai province in the past. Thanks to strictly following the technical process, sanitation, disinfection, sterilization from the stage of processing raw materials, packaging mushroom spawn to inoculating mushroom spawn, cultivating and caring for mushrooms... he almost did not encounter any risks in growing mushrooms. The great advantage is that the market for finished mushrooms is very large and stable, he does not have to worry about the output of the product, but only needs to focus on growing mushrooms.

“The fact that the local Party Committee and government always support and create conditions for me to build facilities for mushroom cultivation, and at the same time introduce the products, first of all to local people, collective kitchens, schools... in the area is a very important premise for my family's products to have a firm foothold in the market. First, the local people trust and use the products, then the good reputation spreads far and wide, and more and more customers from all over know about it" - Mr. Binh confided.

Over the years, knowledge and experience in mushroom cultivation are added, the mushroom production facility of Mr. Dang Van Binh's family is increasingly "solid", and there are more and more orders from many places, many large orders. He carefully studies and seriously researches to calculate the upgrade of his family's mushroom production facility, including accessing new markets, product competitiveness, investment capital, support from local authorities...

After meeting all the factors to ensure “sure victory”, he established Binh Phu Agriculture - Forestry and Service Cooperative in 2017, with himself as Director. He said: We have little capital and operate in the agricultural sector, so although we have to be quick and bold in seizing opportunities, we cannot be too risky!

Currently, Binh Phu Agriculture - Forestry and Service Cooperative has a 1,500 m2 farm, with 3 main products: lingzhi mushrooms, oyster mushrooms and straw mushrooms, raising 2 batches each year, each batch of 8,000 mushroom bags, supplying the market with about 12 tons of various mushrooms (all fresh mushrooms). In 2020, the cooperative's "Binh Phu oyster mushrooms" product was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level. The cooperative also processes and consumes lingzhi mushroom tea bags, and sells mushroom seeds.... On average, each year, the cooperative achieves a total revenue of more than 1 billion VND.

I have little capital and work in the agricultural sector, so although I have to be quick and bold in seizing opportunities, I can't be too risky!

- Director Dang Van Binh -

Regarding future plans, Director Dang Van Binh said that the cooperative is expanding at least 1,000 square meters of workshops and sheds to be able to grow mushroom pillows all year round, increasing the output of commercial mushrooms to serve consumers. That is also the basis for the cooperative to consider processing more products from fresh mushrooms, in order to continue to increase the value of mushroom cultivation.

Currently, the cooperative's fresh mushroom products are sold out as soon as they are produced, while market demand remains very high.

We plan to expand the scale and production and business sectors but encounter some difficulties and obstacles, including the problem of accessing preferential capital sources. The cooperative hopes to continue to receive attention and support from the Party Committee, local authorities and functional agencies, because doing agriculture on its own is a bit slow, if there is more support from the outside, the unit will progress quickly and firmly.

Mr. Vu Van Dang, Vice Chairman of Khanh Yen Commune People's Committee, said: Binh Phu Agriculture - Forestry and Service Cooperative has been operating effectively, making important contributions to the local socio-economic development. The Party Committee and the commune government always pay attention to leading, directing and supporting to create momentum for private economic development in the area.

Quick, bold, and decisive, Mr. Dang Van Binh seized the opportunity to establish a mushroom production facility and later a cooperative. The success of the Binh Phu Agricultural, Forestry and Service Cooperative will contribute to opening up a new direction of economic development for many local households.
