
These days, the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong, Quan Thanh village, Chi Lang commune is busy taking care of custard apples. Mr. Cuong shared: Since 1990, my family has started growing custard apples on the rocky mountains with about 200 trees. Realizing the economic efficiency, since 2010, my family has continued to convert the upland and beach land to grow custard apples with an area of about 8 sao. To gain knowledge and experience to apply in production, I proactively registered to participate in training courses on techniques for planting and caring for custard apples organized by the commune. Thanks to that, my family's custard apple area has developed well, currently my family has 700 custard apple trees, all of which are produced according to VietGAP process, on average each year my family harvests 10 tons of fruit. In addition to custard apple trees, my family also grows 150 Dien grapefruit trees, every year, from fruit trees, the family earns over 300 million VND in income.
Not only Mr. Cuong's family, in recent years, with the guidance of the Party Committee and the commune government, farmers in Chi Lang commune have converted ineffective rice and corn growing areas to growing fruit trees with high economic value. According to statistics of Chi Lang commune, the whole commune currently has over 1,700 hectares of fruit trees including custard apple, grapefruit, lychee, guava... in which custard apple trees occupy the largest area with over 1,300 hectares.
Mr. Hoang Minh Dung, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Chi Lang Commune, said: In recent years, realizing the economic efficiency, people in the commune have proactively expanded the area of fruit trees. In order for people to have production experience, the department has advised the Commune People's Committee to coordinate with relevant units to organize training courses on transferring science and technology on planting and caring for fruit trees, on average organizing 5-10 classes per year. At the same time, creating favorable conditions for households to borrow preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank to develop fruit trees.
To improve the quality and value of fruit trees, in addition to expanding the area, people also focus on applying science and technology to production. The whole commune currently has 529 hectares of na produced according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes. At the same time, the local government has proactively built OCOP products, promoted and developed product consumption markets. Every year, the commune has supported bringing products to participate in fairs and exhibitions in and outside the province; coordinated to organize livestream sessions (live broadcast) to sell and promote products.
Mr. Nguyen Tri Tuan, Director of Dong Mo Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative, said: With the desire to connect custard apple growers for concentrated production, apply science and technology to planting and caring, contributing to increasing product value, in 2017, the Cooperative was established with 30 members, focusing on developing a custard apple planting and caring model with an area of 22.06 hectares. Currently, the entire custard apple area of the Cooperative is produced according to VietGAP process. On average, each year, the Cooperative sells over 198 tons of custard apples to the market, bringing in revenue of over 500 million VND.
Up to now, fruit trees in Chi Lang commune have become the main crop, bringing a stable source of income for the people. Every year, custard apple output reaches over 12,900 tons, worth 324 billion VND; grapefruit yields an average of 400,000 fruits/year, worth 700 million VND... Thereby, contributing to increasing income and reducing poverty in the commune. Currently, the poverty rate of the commune is 1.7% (an average decrease of 2-3% per year), the average income is 45.75 million VND/person/year. In addition, the fruit tree growing model in the commune is also a tourist destination for delegations inside and outside the province. On average, the commune welcomes about 20 delegations inside and outside the province to visit, exchange experiences in changing crop structure, developing fruit tree growing models, especially custard apple growing.
In the coming time, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to propagate and guide people to convert ineffective rice growing areas to grow high-value key fruit trees, striving to plant 15 hectares of new fruit trees each year. With the right direction and the constant efforts of the government and people, Chi Lang commune has been affirming its position as one of the communes that effectively develop fruit tree models in the province. The success of fruit tree development not only brings a prosperous life to people but also opens up a direction for sustainable development, contributing to building a rich and civilized new countryside in Chi Lang homeland.
