Details of the 2026 New Year holiday schedule for Hanoi students

(Dan Tri) - The education sector does not have separate regulations for holidays and Tet, but follows the Labor Code and annual guidance documents of the Prime Minister.

Specifically, the annual holiday schedule will be decided by the Prime Minister and schools will have written instructions on implementation based on that decision, including Lunar New Year, New Year, Hung King's Anniversary, Reunification Day, International Labor Day and National Day September 2.

According to the Labor Code, employees are entitled to 11 paid holidays and Tet holidays, including: 1 day off for New Year (January 1); 5 days for Lunar New Year; 1 day off for Reunification Day (April 30); 1 day off for International Labor Day (May 1); 2 days off for National Day (September 2 and the day before or after); 1 day off for Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (March 10 of the lunar calendar).

New Year's Day 2026 falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Thus, civil servants and employees will have 1 day off.

Applying according to the 2019 Labor Code and the Prime Minister's guiding documents for holidays and Tet of educational institutions, teachers and students this year also have 1 day off for New Year's Day according to the above regulations.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training prescribed the 2025-2026 school year time frame for preschool education, general education and continuing education applied nationwide.

School starts at least 1 week before the opening day. For grades 1, 9, and 12, school starts at least 2 weeks before the opening day. The opening day is September 5.

Finish semester I before January 18, 2026, complete the program and end the school year before May 31, 2026.

Consider recognition of completion of primary school program and consider recognition of graduation from secondary school before June 30, 2026.

Complete enrollment for first grade classes before July 31, 2026.

The 2026 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 11-12, 2026.

Other national exams are organized according to regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The principles for developing the local school year schedule are as follows: The local school year schedule must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (semester I has 18 weeks, semester II has 17 weeks). The school year schedule must be suitable to the characteristics and practical conditions of the locality.

Holidays and Tet are implemented according to the provisions of the Labor Code and annual guidelines.

Teachers' annual leave is taken during the summer break or can be arranged alternately at other times of the year to suit the specific characteristics and school year schedule of the locality.

The school year schedule needs to ensure consistency for all levels of education in a residential area, especially in general schools with many levels of education.
