Recently, the 37th Beijing Daxing Watermelon Festival and the "Watermelon - Sweet Melon" competition took place in Panggezhuang Town, Daxing District, Beijing, China.

322 teams from 8 provinces and cities such as Beijing, Shandong, Tianjin, Hebei... brought more than 1,200 melons of all kinds to compete.

The competition awarded six categories: Large watermelon group (by weight), medium watermelon group, small watermelon group, mixed sweet watermelon group, new variety group and creative watermelon award.

A jury of 20 watermelon and melon experts scored the entries based on appearance, sweetness, weight and many other factors.

As a result, the 97.75kg melon grown by Mr. Xie Zhengjiang (in Panggezhuang Town, Daxing District, Beijing) won the title of “Watermelon King” in 2025 in China. This is also the heaviest melon in the history of the festival season.

The giant melon is over 80cm in diameter and takes 4 adults to lift it. The flesh is bright pink and the melon is sweet, crunchy and refreshing.

Chinese media reported that this is the fifth year that Mr. Ta Chinh Giang has grown watermelons that have earned the title of "Watermelon King" in this country.

Sharing about the process of growing giant melons, Mr. Ta Chinh Giang said that he started growing the seeds on February 1 and reserved 20 square meters of land for each “king melon” seedling, while regular melons only need 1 square meter.

He uses supplementary lighting to prolong photosynthesis, combined with electronic scales to monitor weight gain every hour (sometimes up to 30g/hour). In addition, he also uses smart agriculture applications to control temperature, humidity and ventilation in the greenhouse.

The method of aligning the number of fruits on the vine that he researched himself helps the plant concentrate maximum nutrition on one fruit - the key factor that helps the watermelon weigh nearly 100kg.

In addition to special melon growing techniques, soil and weather factors also contribute to creating “giant” melons. Bang Cac Trang village is located on alluvial soil, airy sandy soil, rich in minerals.

The large temperature difference between day and night also helps the melons accumulate sugar and grow exceptionally well. Mr. Ta Chinh Giang shared: "The soil here is like a natural fertilizer storehouse for watermelons."

The 97.75kg melon is of the Kinh Tan 8 variety. This variety was bred by the Fruit and Vegetable Research Center of the Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences . This variety is notable for its disease resistance and exceptionally tough rind.

The melon has a round shape and a thick skin that helps the fruit withstand great pressure from water and fertilizer during the strong growth stage, while minimizing impact during transportation. Thanks to its outstanding advantages, Kinh Tan 8 melon variety has won the championship in the large weight watermelon category for 5 consecutive years, becoming an "undefeated candidate" during the festival seasons.
