Syrian state news agency SANA reported that during a meeting in the Iranian capital Tehran, armed groups that fought against the government of former President Bashar al-Assad agreed to voluntarily disband and join the unified Ministry of Defense .
The Syrian Military Operations Directorate of the interim government released the information, stating: "The factions ensured security in the area and began withdrawing heavy weapons, while making preparations to recover weapons previously held by the former regime in the designated areas."
The move comes as Syria enters a three-month political transition period after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted on December 8.
On December 22, al-Sharaa said that armed groups would only be allowed to exist in Syria as part of the defense ministry and that most of the group's commanders had accepted this condition even before the military operation against al-Assad.
In addition, the HTS leader affirmed that any armed forces as well as all weapons in the country, including those held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, will be under state control.
A day earlier, it was reported that Mourhaf Abu Qasra, a member of the main military operations force that played a key role in overthrowing al-Assad, had been appointed as Syria's defense minister in the interim government.
