"Xuan Duong Love Market" where traditional cultural values ​​are preserved

BBK - "Xuan Duong Love Market", Na Ri district is held on the 25th day of the 3rd lunar month every year, not only as a cultural meeting place, a place for old friends to return to their old love, but also contributes to preserving and promoting the unique cultural identity of the Nung people.

“Xuan Duong Love Market” in Na Ri district was formed more than a century ago (1911). Up to now, this unique market has been maintained with the beauty of national cultural identity, which is Sli singing - a unique love song of the Nung people, traditional costumes and folk games. The opening ceremony, the origin and meaning of “Xuan Duong Love Market” are told through elaborately staged scenes with traditional cultural materials such as Sli and luong verses, bringing special emotions to the audience.

The highlight of the festival is the performance space of the smooth Sli melody along the poetic Bac Sen River. Going to the “love market”, visitors can easily encounter and admire the traditional costumes of the Tay and Nung people, along with unique musical instruments.

This year, 94 years old, Mrs. Nong Thi Sach, a Nung ethnic in Thien Long commune, Binh Gia district ( Lang Son ) still wakes up early and asks her son to take her to Na Ri to go to the "love market". Mrs. Sach said: "I have loved and known Sli singing since I was young, now I no longer have the strength to sing, but every year I have to go to Xuan Duong to listen to love singing. For the Nung, Sli singing is a source of pride, an indispensable spiritual food".

The National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Sli singing of the Nung people in Xuan Duong (recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2021) is practiced in a variety of spaces such as: in weddings, longevity celebrations, singing on the fields, and even singing in funerals. Also because of its affirmed values, Sli singing has been the main art form in the "Xuan Duong Love Market" Cultural Festival for many years. From the moment people of Xuan Duong commune see the sun until they leave the "temporary world", they are accompanied by Sli singing. Sli lyrics are stories of daily life, love songs, unique cultural features, and also the heart of the people in the highlands. Going to the love market without immersing yourself in the love Sli singing is considered not having been to Xuan Duong.

Artisan Hoang Xuan Thu, from Lang Son, has been a regular visitor to the “Xuan Duong Love Market” for many years. Although he is 60 years old, every time he comes to the “love market”, Mr. Thu is still moved and emotional. Not only does he long to meet his old friends, but more importantly, he wants to have close friends to sing deep, smooth Sli songs with. Therefore, every year, Mr. Thu has to be present about 2 days before the market to chat with the artists throughout the night.

“Thanks to the “love market”, Sli-loving artisans like us have the opportunity to meet, chat, sing and preserve the traditional art passed down from ancient times,” artisan Hoang Xuan Thu shared.

Contributing to preserving the national intangible heritage, at the end of 2022, the Xuan Duong Commune Sli Singing Club was established with 43 members. As the Club's Chairman, Meritorious Artist Nong Van Ho actively participates in training and teaching Sli singing to the local young generation. He considers it a way to help Sli songs resonate forever.

Since childhood, Hoang Anh Vu, a 7th grader, has been following his grandfather and parents to the "love market" and local cultural activities. With the guidance of artist Nong Van Ho, after a few months of studying, Vu was able to confidently perform Sli responses with his friends.
