Farmers in Phu Yen commune prepare for the 2025 winter crop.

In the 2024 winter crop, farmers in Phu Yen, Gia Phu and Muong Coi communes will plant about 400 hectares of vegetables, with an output of about 4,800 tons, bringing in an average income of 25-30 million VND/ha. This year, the communes will guide people to prioritize the planting of various vegetables, potatoes and biomass corn. Of which, biomass corn accounts for 120 hectares; onions 10 hectares; garlic 35 hectares; vegetables and beans of all kinds 230 hectares... Based on the winter crop production plan, the People's Committees of the communes have assigned the Economic Department to provide plant varieties and provide overall technical advice; organize progress monitoring, and support farmers in planting crops. Immediately after the crop season, localities will guide farmers in preparing agricultural materials, plant varieties and production techniques.

Ms. Dinh Thi Khuong, Nhot 2 village, Gia Phu commune, shared: Last winter crop, the commune guided me to grow a variety of vegetables, the yield reached nearly 10 tons, the income was about 40 million VND. This year, following advice from the commune officials, I planted about 800 m² of biomass corn and 1,200 m² of vegetables and cauliflower. Hopefully this winter crop will continue to be highly effective, increasing the family's income.

According to forecasts, the winter weather of 2025-2026 will be colder than the average of recent years. Cold air is concentrated, low temperatures are likely to cause severe cold spells, mainly concentrated in early 2026. Therefore, communes guide farmers to urgently prepare the land, take advantage of favorable weather to plant seeds. Apply protective measures, spread out planting to minimize damage caused by possible extreme weather. At the same time, strengthen the field banks; use flood-resistant varieties and regularly monitor weather forecasts, take timely response measures to minimize damage caused by natural disasters.

Farmers in Nhot 2 village, Gia Phu commune plant winter corn.

The specific planting time for this year's winter crops has been announced to farmers through the village's loudspeaker system. Accordingly, a number of crops have been scheduled for specific planting schedules: Tomatoes are planted from late October to early December 2025; potatoes in November; cucumbers, green beans, long beans and other vegetables before November 15. Farmers are encouraged to plant in separate crops, using varieties with high economic value, such as cucumbers, pumpkins, spinach, cabbage, kale, turnips, vegetables and beans of all kinds... Up to now, farmers in the communes in the Phu Yen area have prepared land for winter crops on about 120 hectares; the management of fertilizers, plant varieties and pesticides has been implemented to ensure adequate supply for farmers.

Ms. Hoang Thi Uong, Lem village, Phu Yen commune, informed: My family has more than 3,000 m² of rice fields, growing two rice crops and one winter crop every year. Due to the impact of the flood in September, the rice area was damaged by about 1,000 m². In addition, the rice fields were also partially damaged by flood water. Therefore, after completing the harvest of the summer-autumn rice crop, my family reinforced the fields and created enough moisture for the soil before planting winter crops. This year, I mainly grow vegetables, beans and a part of the area grows corn biomass as food for my family's livestock.

Regarding irrigation water sources, the People's Committees of the communes have mobilized people to strengthen the repair of irrigation canal systems immediately after the floods at the end of September. The operation of irrigation reservoirs in the area to supply water for winter crop production has been focused on, especially monitoring water sources, storing, and operating reservoirs according to procedures. The communes coordinate with the operating units to check water levels and proactively guide farmers to irrigate properly, avoiding water waste.

Mr. Dinh Duc Thang, Chairman of Phu Yen Commune People's Committee, said: To ensure high productivity of winter crops, right after the rice harvest, we send staff to the winter crop fields to advise farmers on choosing suitable crops. At the same time, we provide vegetable and corn seeds and guide the planting process, striving to complete in November; advise people to regularly check for pests and diseases early and take measures to cope with risks such as severe cold, frost damage, ensuring the highest crop yield.

With careful preparation of conditions for winter crop production, we believe that the communes in Phu Yen area will continue to have another successful crop, helping farmers earn more income and improve their living standards.
