Qi2 wireless charging standard will have MagSafe connection technology

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/11/2023

Currently, the Qi wireless charging standard is quite slow and makes the device heat up. That will soon change because the next standard from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially launched. The Qi2 standard will provide magnetic charging capabilities, with faster and more efficient charging.

Currently, Qi-certified wireless chargers compatible with Android devices lack fast charging capabilities and magnetic connections. This is in contrast to Apple devices, from the iPhone 12, Apple Watch 6, and AirPods 3rd generation onwards, which have been equipped with MagSafe charging. The feature helps connect to magnets inside the device to provide fast charging capabilities.

WPC announced Qi2 technology at the annual CES technology trade show in January. Qi2 has received industry-wide recognition, and wireless chargers that meet the standard will be available for purchase later this year.

Qi2 wireless charging standard will inherit magnetic attraction feature like Apple's MagSafe

Brands like Belkin, Mophie, Anker, and Aircharge already have Qi2-certified accessories, but the only Qi2-certified smartphone is Apple's iPhone 15. The WPC says Qi2's magnetic properties are based on the MagSafe technology that Apple contributed, so it's no surprise that Apple's latest phones are the first to use it.

Currently, compatible iPhones can deliver up to 15W of power when using a MagSafe wireless charger, while regular Qi-certified wireless chargers only deliver 7.5W. MagSafe chargers deliver 5W of power to Android, while standard Qi chargers can deliver around 10W.

According to The Verge , the Qi2 charger promises 15W charging for the iPhone 15 and compatible Android smartphones in the future. However, it is not yet clear whether MagSafe-compatible iPhones will be able to charge quickly thanks to the Qi2 charger, as well as which Android manufacturers will soon implement the new wireless charging standard.
