From hobby to achievement

Pham Le Bao Anh is a student at Han Thuyen Primary School (Hong Ha Ward, Hanoi ). Not only is Bao Anh good at English, she is also good at all subjects. During her 5 years of primary school, Bao Anh has always been an excellent student.

She especially loves learning foreign languages. From a young age, when exposed to English, Bao Anh liked to learn on her own in a way that was both entertaining and helped her increase her vocabulary and practice her pronunciation. She often went on YouTube to listen to fairy tales, children's songs, and watch children's entertainment programs... in English.

Later, she also listened to news reports and interviews in English conducted by international news channels. From the free and extremely rich resources on the internet, Bao Anh learned English by herself, then confidently asked her parents to register her for the IELTS test.

The fact that Bao Anh did not attend extra classes at English centers but still achieved good results in the IELTS exam shows her family her passion and serious efforts.

Before taking the IELTS test, in grade 5, Bao Anh won third prize in the district-level English Olympic competition for grade 5 students. Then, in the Hanoi City English Olympic competition for primary school students, she continued to win third prize.

Thanks to that, she was given a free course at a famous English center. But Bao Anh told her mother that she only liked to study by herself, so Le Thi Khue - Bao Anh's mother - did not force her to study at the center.

Ms. Khue said that in order to best support her child in his self-study journey, she and her husband always proactively accompany and closely follow their child during the learning process. They pay great attention to what their child listens to and watches online, to ensure that their child self-study in the right direction and is exposed to content that is good for their development journey.

Bao Anh also loves drawing and playing chess. She often searches online for art and chess content in English to both improve her foreign language skills and gain more knowledge to develop her personal interests. Bao Anh won a gold medal in chess at the district-level student sports competition in the 2024-2025 school year.

Ms. Khue said that Bao Anh likes to explore and learn on her own, so her parents respect her and let her pursue the things she loves in her own way, at her own pace.

Parents are supportive and non-intrusive

Bao Anh wanted to take the IELTS test, so her parents created conditions for her to try. When taking the test, Bao Anh felt very comfortable, because neither her parents nor Bao Anh cared much about the results.

During the process of raising their child, Khue and her husband always pay attention to not put pressure on their child's studies. All competitions that the child participates in, such as English competitions and chess competitions, are because the child wants to participate in order to interact and test his/her abilities. When the child expresses his/her desire, the parents will support, find out information and help the child participate in competitions that are appropriate to his/her ability and age.

Khue and her husband see competitions as an opportunity for their children to know their own capabilities. They never put pressure on their children to achieve results. No matter what results they achieve, their parents happily welcome, encourage and cheer them on.

When Bao Anh received her IELTS test results, she asked her parents if they were happy with the results. Khue and her husband assured their daughter that the fact that she wanted to take the test and complete it was enough to make her parents happy.

“Your parents are always happy because you have tried hard in your studies and pursued your interests seriously. No matter what score you get, your parents are happy because they have seen your efforts,” Khue told her daughter.

In primary school, Bao Anh did not attend extra classes. She focused on studying in class and then completed her homework at home. To develop this self-awareness, Khue and her husband trained their child to have a proactive attitude in studying and life from an early age.

In addition, the couple also agreed on the point of view that they should always prioritize giving their children more free time, so that they can study and play on their own in the way they like. For Bao Anh, after finishing her schoolwork, she will study English, play chess, learn to draw, go swimming...

Ms. Khue believes that children learn to grow up faster and better when their parents let them manage and use their free time the way they want.

Although giving their children a lot of autonomy and respecting their interests and desires, Khue and her husband also pay attention to closely following their children in a subtle and skillful way. They always monitor their children's progress in completing their assigned homework and how they access content online.

Each child develops at his or her own pace.

Currently, Bao Anh shows the clearest inclination towards learning foreign languages. She dreams of becoming a diplomat or a debate coach. Bao Anh also hopes to maintain good academic performance so that she can get a scholarship to study abroad in the future, opening up opportunities to study and explore the world.

Seeing their child enjoy spending free time to learn many things on his own makes Khue and her husband very happy, but they also encourage their child to balance studying with other activities. When her parents take her out, she likes to go to the bookstore, books written in English are Bao Anh's number one priority.

Ms. Khue sees Bao Anh as having an inclination towards languages, fine arts, and music. Observing the way she studies, Ms. Khue admits that she feels her child studies “very easily”. She is not pressured or feels tired or exhausted during the learning process. Therefore, she also feels more secure.

When asked about the opinion of some parents who “race” to have their children study and take the IELTS exam early, causing children who are not yet fluent in Vietnamese to have to study too much English, Ms. Khue said that it is important for parents to understand their children’s inclinations. From there, parents will create conditions for their children to learn foreign languages in a way that is suitable for them.

There are things that “you can’t have if you want them to, and you can’t force them to do them,” because they are not your child’s natural inclinations. Therefore, the first and foremost thing in educating children is to understand them, so that they feel willing, comfortable, and even enjoy the process of trying to practice.

Every child is different, every family has a different way of raising children, but the most important thing is that parents must work with their children to find out their inclinations and interests, to help them feel comfortable mentally during the process of self-development.

Next school year, Bao Anh will enter 6th grade. Khue and her husband's parenting orientation is still to set the most basic requirements for their child. They only need their child to grasp and complete well the content taught by the teachers in class, prioritizing balanced and comprehensive development, and do not set any other requirements.

You will always be by your side to monitor your child's learning and support him effectively when needed. But basically, Bao Anh's parents only need their child to reach developmental milestones appropriate to his age.
