MacBook Air CPU overheats when handling heavy tasks

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên11/03/2024

According to TechNewsSpace , Apple has just introduced new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models equipped with powerful M3 processors. During the review of the new product, the authors of the YouTube channel Max Tech discovered that when processing heavy tasks, the processor of the new MacBook Air can heat up to 114 degrees Celsius.

During the testing of the new 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip, the tester used the 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme and Cinebench 2024 performance benchmarks, which measure how the device performs under heavy tasks for a long time. During the test, the average CPU temperature was 107 degrees Celsius and the GPU was 103 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the body temperature reached 46 degrees Celsius.

Since the last few generations of MacBook Airs have been equipped with passive cooling systems, it’s no surprise that hardware components get too hot, and the latest MacBook Air is no exception. The more expensive MacBook Pros, in particular, have fans that help cool the components more efficiently. Previously, MacBook Airs with M2 chips had similar issues, although there’s no information on the exact temperatures the processors in those laptops can reach.

Long-term operation at 114 degrees Celsius is not safe for the processor, so during the test, the chip's clock speed and power consumption were gradually reduced. As a result, the processor temperature dropped to 100 degrees Celsius, which is still quite high but not too dangerous for the chip.

Of course, this also results in a performance drop. In Cinebench R23 tests, performance dropped by about 10% for the 15-inch MacBook Air and about 20% for the 13-inch version. Graphics performance also dropped significantly. The 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test on the 15-inch MacBook Air showed a 27% performance drop when comparing the best results to the worst results.
