That is the case of Ms. NTTD (HCMC), who has suffered from migraines for the past 20 years. Although the patient has visited many major hospitals in HCMC, her condition has not improved.
The pain was persistent and unrelenting, seriously affecting Ms. D's sleep, daily activities and spirit.
At People's Hospital 115 (HCMC), from the results of in-depth examination and paraclinical tests, doctors found that the cause of Ms. D's chronic headaches was nerve compression.

After determining the cause, the patient underwent surgery to relieve nerve compression (Illustration: Unsplash).
According to Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien, Head of the Microsurgery Unit, Deputy Head of the Orthopedic Trauma Department, patient D. is one of many cases of long-term migraines recently admitted to the hospital.
"After examining and performing paraclinical tests to accurately determine the type of headache, we decided to intervene surgically. Most of these cases have a condition of nerve compression," Dr. Vien shared.
After the surgery, Mrs. D's health had obvious changes. Her headaches were significantly reduced, and she slept deeper and better.
Most importantly, the surgery freed the patient from persistent pain, helped Mrs. D. escape negative thoughts, and find joy in life again. She no longer had to worry and be haunted by the pain that could strike at any time.
Sharing more, Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien also noted that this surgical method is only effective for cases of migraines caused by compression of specific nerves or identified compression diseases.
"For cases of migraine headaches where the cause of compression is not found, surgery is not yet an appropriate treatment option," the doctor emphasized.
The success of this technique not only affirms the hospital's high level of expertise but also opens a new direction in treating this unpleasant disease, bringing the opportunity to live a healthy life and a better quality of life for patients.
Migraine is a type of primary headache that occurs on either the left or right side of the head. The pain occurs in episodes lasting from 4 to 72 hours, with symptoms of pulsating, nausea, sensitivity to sound, light or smell, and is worse with exertion.
Migraines are common in adolescents and young adults. Migraines can be hereditary. If one parent has migraines, the child has a 50% chance of having migraines. This increases to 75% if both parents have migraines.
