Overcome difficulties and get rich

Enlisting in the army in 1982, veteran Luong Phuoc My (born in 1961, residing in Hamlet 1, Tan Thanh Commune, Thu Thua District, Long An Province) fought in Group 7706, Front 779 in Cambodia. After 3 years, he was discharged from the army and returned home to start his career in his homeland.

With support from the local government for 1 hectare of land for production, Mr. My started to try his hand at rice farming. However, due to unsuitable land conditions, low rice productivity and unstable income, Mr. My did not give up and continued to look for new directions to improve his economy .

In 2017, with the support of the Association of War Veterans, he boldly invested in raising fattened cows. Thanks to his hard-working and diligent nature, proactively learning from friends about raising cattle, and participating in training courses on techniques applied to raising cattle, the herd reproduced and developed well, bringing in an income of about 70 million VND each year.

During a visit to learn about local farming models, he realized that jackfruit trees were suitable for the soil and climate conditions, and the output was stable. In 2019, he decided to borrow an additional 30 million VND from the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank of Thu Thua District to invest in planting 0.8 hectares of jackfruit.

Mr. My shared: “Do not be afraid of difficulties, the important thing is to find the right direction. Jackfruit trees are relatively easy to grow, require little care, when the tree starts to bear fruit, prune the branches and fruit, depending on each tree to leave more or less fruit. Spray medicine to treat gummosis on the tree every 2 weeks and fertilize to help the fruit grow quickly, each harvest sells for 17,000 VND/kg, profit is more than 100 million VND/year”.

Not stopping there, Mr. My also invested in an additional 0.3 hectares of land to grow crops and raise fish to increase his family's income.

Chairman of the Association of War Veterans in Tan Thanh Commune, Thu Thua District - Nguyen Tan Loi said: "Mr. My is a war veteran who has achieved the title of good producer and businessman of the district for many consecutive years. In addition to being good at economics , he also actively participates in mobilizing people to contribute funds to build bridges, build rural roads, and help people in difficult circumstances in the locality."

Enrich yourself and share with the community

Veteran Tran Van Nguyen (Binh Hoa hamlet, Duc Tan commune, Tan Tru district) has an income of nearly 300 million VND/year thanks to raising pangasius fry.

After returning to his hometown after being discharged from the army in 1991, Mr. Tran Van Nguyen (born in 1968, residing in Binh Hoa hamlet, Duc Tan commune, Tan Tru district) struggled to make a living with many jobs. Although life was difficult, he never allowed himself to give up.

In 2018, after saving some capital, he decided to renovate more than 0.5 hectares of land to grow dragon fruit. Due to the soil being contaminated with alum, growing dragon fruit did not bring the expected economic efficiency, affecting family life.

Having failed with dragon fruit, in 2022, Mr. Nguyen switched to growing bamboo for shoots with low investment costs, not picky about soil and less care. On an area of 0.3 hectares, each day, he harvests more than 20kg of bamboo shoots, selling at prices ranging from 15,000-20,000 VND/kg. Although the income is not large, it is stable, helping him accumulate gradually.

Mr. Nguyen continues to invest in raising pangasius fry to develop the economy. With 0.5ha of pond, each crop, he releases about 600,000 pangasius fry. Thanks to diligently learning techniques and taking care of the fish, on average, he earns nearly 300 million VND per crop from raising pangasius fry.

Mr. Nguyen shared: "All the work from farming to raising livestock is done by the couple, without hiring workers to save costs."

With the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldier, forged in the military environment, Mr. Nguyen took the lead in participating in the local new rural construction movement, especially mobilizing people to donate land to expand rural roads.

Over the past 10 years, Mr. Nguyen has mobilized the construction of more than 10 routes, each 1.5-2km long, with a total cost of more than 10 billion VND. In addition, he also regularly mobilizes philanthropists and close friends to support and help people in difficult circumstances in the locality.

Vice President of the Association of War Veterans in Duc Tan Commune, Tan Tru District - Nguyen Thanh Loc said: "War veteran Tran Van Nguyen is not only good at economics but also exemplary in leading emulation movements and enthusiastic about social work in the locality, trusted and respected by the people".

Leaving the army and returning to normal life, the former soldiers still maintain their spirit of dedication and devotion to the community./.
