On September 10, Binh Dan Hospital announced that it had coordinated with Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center to save the life of a 17-year-old male youth who suffered abdominal trauma and multiple organ damage after a traffic accident.
Patient NPH (17 years old in Con Dao special zone) was admitted to hospital with multiple injuries after being hit from behind by a motorbike, falling 4 meters forward. Although the patient was transfused with one unit (350 ml) of packed red blood cells, his condition continued to worsen.
On the morning of September 9, the patient had a rapid pulse of 120 beats/minute, the hemoglobin index dropped to 7g/dl, and was diagnosed with ongoing internal bleeding. The patient is at risk of hemorrhagic shock if not operated on promptly.

Immediately after that, Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung, Director of Binh Dan Hospital and his team arrived at Con Dao in time to help the patient escape from danger. After direct consultation, the team of doctors decided to operate on the patient.
The surgery was performed urgently by Dr. Luong Thanh Tung - Deputy Director of Binh Dan Hospital - as the team leader. Also participating in the surgery were doctors from general surgery, thoracic-vascular surgery, urology, and anesthesia and resuscitation departments from the hospital to the intensive care unit.
Through exploratory laparoscopy, many injuries were recorded including: left kidney torn in half, left costophrenic angle abdominal wall muscle tear, left hemothorax and pancreatic tail contusion. There was a large hematoma in the left renal fossa, the left kidney was ruptured at the upper pole and the lower pole could not be preserved.
The patient was transferred to open surgery to suture the abdominal wall muscle tear, place a left pleural drain, and remove the left kidney to stop the bleeding and save the patient's life.
Doctors carefully assessed the remaining organs to ensure there was no other damage.
After removing all the blood clots, cleaning the abdomen and placing two drainage tubes, the doctors closed the abdomen and sutured the skin. The total amount of blood lost during the surgery was 1,500 ml.
After surgery, the patient was revived and intensively cared for by experienced anesthesiologists. On the first postoperative day, the patient's vital signs were stable, his abdomen was soft, and the drainage was working well.
Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung shared: "This is a case of complex closed abdominal trauma causing internal bleeding. Thanks to the coordination of multidisciplinary doctors, a fully equipped operating room, and a blood bank, the patient was saved in time.
In addition, we also support the development of infection control and the establishment of surgical procedures. We will gradually build sustainable medical resources for the locality."
Mr. Hung also assessed that this surgery shows the need to improve emergency surgery capacity in remote areas. On bad weather days, air transport is risky.
Specifically, patient H., if not treated promptly, will have risks of acute blood loss, hematoma infection or respiratory failure due to pleural effusion. Strengthening and coordinating multidisciplinary doctors from central hospitals in the city opens the way for developing a surgical emergency system right in Con Dao.
Surgical cases can be performed on-site to take advantage of the "golden time" for emergency treatment, minimizing risks to patients when having to be transported long distances.
