On the evening of October 30, the leader of the Quang Ngai Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital said that "the surgery for the pregnant woman with eclampsia who had to cross the forest and landslide to get to the hospital for emergency surgery was successful. At this stage, mother and baby are stable."
Red alert, ready to perform surgery on pregnant woman
Doctor Lu Thi Thuy Quyen, the main surgeon of the surgical team, said that when receiving the information, the hospital raised the red alert throughout the hospital, ready to perform emergency surgery on mother and baby.
When admitted, the mother was stable and had no seizures. However, during the ultrasound, the mother had another seizure and had to be transferred to the recovery room immediately for resuscitation. At the same time, tests were urgently performed and blood was prepared for surgery.
The surgical team included Dr. Quyen as the main surgeon, an assistant surgeon, and two anesthesiologists...
"Because this is a difficult and urgent case, in addition to preparing all plans for the surgery, the neonatal pediatrician is also present to take care of the baby immediately after the surgery, while this side continues to take care of the mother," said Dr. Quyen.
A funny situation was that there was only one family member accompanying the pregnant woman, but she got carsick and vomited and almost fainted when she arrived at the Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital. So the doctors and nurses had to take care of her. All issues related to the pregnant woman were left to the hospital's medical team.
"The mother is now awake after the surgery, and the baby boy, weighing 2.8kg, is also in stable health. We are continuing to monitor and take care of him carefully and will re-evaluate later. For now, we are celebrating this stage," said Dr. Quyen.
Talking about eclampsia, Dr. Quyen said this is a dangerous disease caused by the fetus. When the pregnant woman has seizures and high blood pressure, it can lead to ruptured blood vessels in the brain, cerebral hemorrhage, coma and death.
The fetus is also extremely dangerous because the baby's heart rate is fast, complications can easily occur if not treated promptly and operated on.

Race against time, through forests, over landslides
At 3:30 p.m. the same day, the Quang Ngai Department of Health received urgent information from Son Tay Medical Center about the case of pregnant woman D.TD, 38 weeks pregnant, admitted to the hospital in a state of severe eclampsia. The disease progressed rapidly, threatening the lives of both mother and fetus.
The only way to save the patient was to perform an emergency surgery. However, the road from Son Tay to the provincial center was very chaotic, with many locations severely eroded due to the prolonged heavy rain.
The leader of the Quang Ngai Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital recalled: "At that time, the plan to bring doctors from the hospital to perform surgery was considered. But we considered it unfeasible, because Son Tay is a mountainous area with landslides everywhere.
If there is no medical equipment for testing and no safe room for surgery, it's like nothing.
The optimal solution is to "relay" the mother through the forest and landslides to an area where an ambulance can reach, then take her straight to the hospital.
After assessing the situation, the provincial health sector coordinated with the police, military, traffic and local authorities... to organize a special journey, overcoming nearly 100km of dangerous mountain roads to bring the patient to Quang Ngai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.
The forces are divided into many stages: on the road that can be traveled, the ambulance moves at maximum speed; at the landslide location, the patient is transferred on a stretcher, carried through muddy areas, slippery slopes or dense forests...
Throughout the journey, medical staff were on duty to monitor blood pressure, provide IV fluids and provide respiratory support for the mother.
At the same time, many vehicles were arranged to be on standby along the route. Every time a landslide occurred, they had to change vehicles or carry a stretcher through the forest. The rain had not stopped yet, the road was slippery, but everyone tried their best to help the pregnant woman D. receive timely emergency care.
After many hours of continuous movement, the rescue team brought the pregnant woman to Son Ha commune, 40km from Quang Ngai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.
This is not only a race against time, but also a life-and-death journey amidst the flood of dozens of people who are doing their best for the safety of a mother and child in the highlands of Son Tay.
