Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has claimed a landslide victory in the general election on July 23, a party spokesman said.
Although the official results have yet to be announced, CPP spokesman Sok Eysan confirmed the results on the evening of July 23, saying this marked another great success for the CPP.
“We won a landslide victory in this election, but we have not yet counted the number of seats we won,” Sok Eysan told Xinhua. “This really reflects the people’s confidence in the CPP’s leadership.”
A total of 18 political parties compete in the general election, held every five years, to elect 125 lawmakers to the new National Assembly .
Voter turnout was 84%, equivalent to 8.1 million people voting, according to the National Election Committee of Cambodia (NEC).
Mr Hun Sen said this year’s voter turnout – the second highest in three decades – proved that calls by mainly foreign opponents to sabotage the election with protest ballots had failed.
The NEC was still counting votes nationwide on the evening of July 23. The official results will be announced on August 9.
The July 23 election was the country's seventh general election since 1993.
In the previous general election held in 2018, the CPP won all 125 seats in the National Assembly.
The CPP has led the Southeast Asian nation of 16 million people since 1979 .
