"I hope the people will understand when I announce that I will not continue as prime minister ," Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a special broadcast on state television, adding that General Hun Manet would lead the new government, according to AFP.
Prime Minister Hun Sen (71 years old) is one of the world's longest-serving leaders, having led Cambodia for nearly four decades.

Mr. Hun Sen made the above statement after The Phnom Penh Post reported on July 24 that Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) announced the preliminary results of the National Assembly election late on July 23, showing that the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 120/125 seats.
Earlier, the CPP announced that General Hun Manet also won a seat in the National Assembly, a condition for him to become prime minister if elected by lawmakers.
Last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen said in an interview that General Hun Manet could become prime minister within three to four weeks after the July 23 general election, according to Reuters.
Earlier, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on June 30 that he would do his best to make General Hun Manet lead the country even better than he did, but emphasized that after he was no longer prime minister, he would still have some political power as president of the CPP, which has the right to expel members from the party, according to the Khmer Times.
General Hun Manet (46 years old) is the first Cambodian to graduate from the prestigious West Point Military Academy in the United States. He has a master's degree in economics from New York University (USA) and a doctorate in economics from the University of Bristol (UK).
