Thick blankets can make the body feel warm and cozy while sleeping. According to new research led by a team from Flinders University and the University of Adelaide (both in Australia), this warmth offers three main benefits: boosting mood, reducing reliance on sleeping pills, and improving sleep quality.
According to ScienceAlert on October 27, the research team stated that the evidence is strong enough for health professionals to officially recommend the use of thick blankets for insomnia patients.
"In therapy, thick blankets are becoming increasingly popular as a supportive tool across a wide range of ages, but there are currently no clinical guidelines on their use," says medical expert Suzanne Dawson of Flinders University.
The research team reviewed 18 previous studies analyzing the effects of using thick blankets overnight. Although the studies varied in detail and the number of participants, ranging from 1 to 4,092 volunteers, the team compared the data to conclude that thick blankets have positive effects, such as improving sleep quality and the speed at which people fall asleep.
Oddly, these findings only apply to adults. The research team said further analysis is needed to confirm the pros and cons of thick blankets for children, although some parents reported their children seemed more comfortable, less anxious, and more focused on daytime activities if they slept under blankets.
Additionally, when covering children with cognitive difficulties with blankets, parents should use blankets that the child can easily push off.
The research team conducted the analysis with the intention of discovering clinical guidelines for the use of thick blankets. They also aimed to begin formalizing some standards in blanket design, including weight and materials.
The group concluded that using thick blankets while sleeping is a relatively simple method that most people can try to improve their sleep.
"Sleep is a basic human need. When a person doesn't get enough sleep, they can experience a variety of health problems and increase their risk of or worsen chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and mental health issues," said Dawson.
The study was published in the American Journal of Occupational Theraly.
