Leeches swimming in water bottle with original label: Ministry of Health takes action

Regarding the report of leeches being found swimming in pre-packaged drinking water bottles in Quang Binh province, on the morning of May 8, the Department of Food Safety ( Ministry of Health ), said that Mr. Nguyen Hung Long, Deputy Director of the Department of Food Safety, had signed and sent a request to the Quang Binh Department of Health to inspect and handle information reflecting food safety on bottled drinking water products in the area.

To proactively monitor, detect and promptly handle violations of food safety in food production and trading regarding the above reflected information, the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health ) requests the Quang Binh Department of Health to direct functional units to inspect and verify information according to the above reflected content.

Take samples of food products suspected of being unsafe to test for food safety indicators; detect and strictly handle food safety violations and publicize them in the mass media.

Previously, as reported by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , on April 28, teachers at Phong Thuy Kindergarten, Le Thuy district, when giving one of the newly purchased water bottles from Mineral Water Joint Stock Company B (Kien Giang town, Le Thuy district) to students to use, discovered a leech in the 20-liter water bottle with the label still intact.

When shaking the water bottle, the leech the size of a chopstick began to wiggle and move. The school invited the commune representative to come and work and give a specific report.

According to Ms. Duong Thi Thuy Ha, the school's principal, previously, the school often bought 20-liter water bottles from the above company for students to drink.

The most recent purchase on April 25 and 28, when using one of the newly purchased water bottles, the above incident occurred. After that, the school immediately stopped using bottled water from this company.
