On June 23, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the 2025 10th grade entrance exam scores of more than 76,000 candidates. While the benchmark scores for specialized 10th graders in Ho Chi Minh City mostly decreased, many teachers predicted that the benchmark scores for regular 10th graders would increase slightly or remain the same as last year.
More than 6,000 students with 24 points or more
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, in the 2025 10th grade entrance exam season, the city will have more than 6,000 students with a total score of 24 or higher in three subjects. Of these, about 1,500 students will pass the exam and enroll in three specialized schools: Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia, and High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
Thus, about 4,500 students will continue to apply to the remaining high schools. According to the department, the total enrollment target for the top 10 high schools in the city is also nearly 6,000 10th graders.
"With this situation, the department will certainly have to take down candidates who scored 22 or 22.5 points or more to some top high schools. Increasing, decreasing or maintaining the standard scores of top schools will depend on the number of candidates registering to take the exam at that school.
This year, schools with a sudden increase in competition rates such as Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (District 1), Le Quy Don High School (District 3)... will likely increase their admission scores, but not much.
As for high schools that this year do not recruit specialized 10th graders but increase enrollment quotas for regular 10th graders such as Nguyen Thuong Hien, Gia Dinh, Mac Dinh Chi... can keep the same or reduce the standard score by 0.25 - 1 point" - Mr. Thai, a math teacher in Tan Binh district, commented.
Similarly, Ms. Hoa Mai, an English teacher at an after-school cultural training center in Thu Duc, also predicted: "The number of candidates achieving excellent scores in math this year has increased slightly compared to last year. The number of candidates achieving scores of 8 or higher in foreign languages has decreased but is still high at about 15,000 students. Literature is almost the same as last year. Therefore, some top schools will increase their benchmark scores by 0.25 - 1.5 points."
Meanwhile, the principal of a junior high school in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City informed that this year's 10th grade entrance exam had 76,435 candidates registered, a decrease of 27,330 students compared to last year. This year, 115 public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City recruited 70,070 students, meaning that only more than 6,000 students failed the public 10th grade exam this year.
This number was nearly 20,000 students in previous years. So it can be said that the race to grade 10 is only tense at top schools and only weak students fail public schools.
"This year, recruiting 10th graders in suburban and outlying areas is quite easy because the quota is high and the number of students in the area is not much. Except for densely populated areas around Vinh Loc High School, Pham Van Sang High School..., I predict that schools in suburban and outlying areas will keep the same admission score as last year or decrease slightly by 0.5 - 1 point" - said this principal.
Surprise with specialized class 10
Contrary to initial concerns about the tension in the race to get into specialized schools, the Department of Education and Training's standard score table for entering specialized grade 10 has surprised many people. Compared to 2024, the standard score for entering specialized grade 10 in most subjects of Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia schools has decreased by 0.25 to 5 points.
The 10th grade specialized in IT at Le Hong Phong School decreased its benchmark score from 37.25 (last year) to 32.25 points (this year). The benchmark score for the 10th grade specialized in chemistry and physics at Tran Dai Nghia School both decreased by 4 points. The two specialized classes both decreased by 3.75 points: the specialized in IT at Tran Dai Nghia School and the specialized in physics at Le Hong Phong School. In addition, the specialized geography and chemistry classes at Le Hong Phong School decreased by 2 points compared to 2024.
Explaining the above issue, an official from the Department of Education and Training said: "The reduction in the admission score for specialized 10th grade is because this year's specialized exam clearly shows the requirement for candidates to apply knowledge to solve life problems.
Because this is the first year of the 2018 generaleducation program, many candidates have not yet adapted to this type of test. Second, a number of excellent students today do not choose to take the exam to enter specialized schools but instead study abroad or study at international schools. Some parents even orient their children to study at top public schools instead of taking the exam to enter specialized schools."
What is the score?
- Literature: 2 candidates scored 9.5 points: For literature, the number of candidates scoring below average was 11,375, a rate of 14.88%; the number of candidates scoring above average was 65,084, a rate of 85.12%. The score level with the largest number of candidates was 7 points with 5,936 candidates; 8 points had 3,543 candidates; 8.25 points had 2,191 candidates. - Foreign language: 68.5% above average: In foreign language, the number of candidates with below average scores was 24,081 candidates, accounting for 31.5%; above average was 52,370 candidates, accounting for 68.5%. The highest score achieved by a candidate in this subject was 7.25 points with 3,143 candidates. The number of candidates with high scores of 8 or higher was quite large: 3,022 candidates with 8 points; 2,863 candidates with 8.25 points; 2,485 candidates with 8.75 points. There were 6,449 candidates with 9 to 9.75 points and 488 candidates with 10 points.

While in previous years, Ho Chi Minh City had less than 50% of candidates scoring above average in this subject.
