A bumper crop of C00
This year, the humanities and social sciences (Block C) saw a "bumper crop" of top scorers, with 19 students sharing the same score: a perfect 10 in History and Geography, and 9.75 in Literature. Meanwhile, only two candidates nationwide achieved a perfect 10 in Literature.
This year, the subjects in Group C also saw a "flood" of perfect scores (10 out of 10), with the number of perfect scores in Geography increasing more than 90 times (from only 35 perfect scores in 2023 to 3,175 this year), and the number of perfect scores in History increasing nearly three times (from 789 perfect scores in 2023 to 2,108 perfect scores).
According to the Ministry of Education and Training 's score distribution analysis, due to the high scores in the Social Sciences combination, the high percentage of excellent scores in Literature and Geography, and the low percentage of below-average scores, experts predict that the admission cutoff scores for universities in the C00 group this year will continue to be high.
Dr. Le Thi Thuy Vinh (Faculty of Literature - Hanoi Pedagogical University 2) predicts that for exam combinations including Literature, the cutoff scores will increase slightly by 0.5 - 1 point, because this year's Literature exam was quite manageable for candidates and did not contain many surprising elements. “For top-tier universities, the cutoff scores for blocks C and D will be 0.5 to 1 point higher than last year. For mid-tier universities, the scores will be the same or only slightly higher than last year, fluctuating around 1 point. I think the cutoff scores for lower-tier universities will remain the same. For universities in the Pedagogical field, the scores for blocks C and D will still be the same or higher than last year, with an expected score of around 8 - 8.5 points per subject for candidates to have a chance of admission,” said Dr. Vinh.
Regarding the prediction of high university entrance scores in 2024, especially for top universities, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of the Communication Center at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, believes that universities currently allocate few quotas for admission based on high school graduation exam scores. Based on the score distribution for each subject, she predicts that the admission scores of universities will remain stable, not fluctuating much compared to last year. If there are fluctuations, they will only be within a very small range, depending on the allocation of quotas according to the admission methods of each university.
Expectations are expected to change starting in 2025.
The Ministry of Education and Training stated that, in general, the score distribution for the 2024 high school graduation exams remains stable and similar to the score distribution in 2023 and previous years. The average and median scores for all subjects nationwide remain stable and similar to those of 2023.
Professor Pham Hong Quang, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen University Council, assessed that, looking at the score distribution analysis, it is encouraging to see the convergence, reflecting that secondary education has been valued and there is no significant skewness. This proves that in the process of organizing teaching and learning in localities, teachers have paid attention to the fundamental foundation of secondary education, creating a solid foundation for students to enter life and providing opportunities for them to continue their education after secondary school.
Emphasizing that teaching and learning under the new 2018 general education program should aim to make general education a foundation for students to enter life, whether participating in labor and production or pursuing post-secondary education, ensuring they have a solid foundation and adapt well to the changing environment today, Mr. Quang affirmed that this exam, although marking the end of a program, opens up a new trend, allowing students to access post-secondary education with certainty.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son - Rector of Hanoi Pedagogical University - assessed that this year's exam question setting process was relatively consistent and gradually showed an approach to new question-setting technologies. "The score distribution this year is quite good. This shows that the exam results are quite stable compared to previous exams, and these results reflect the quality of teaching and learning in general education," Dr. Son emphasized.
In the 2024 high school graduation exam, 485 exam papers nationwide received failing grades (equal to or below 1.0 point). Of these, English had the highest number of failing grades with 133 students, followed by Geography with 75 failing papers, Mathematics with 62, Literature with 59, Biology with 49, Physics with 48, Civic Education with 23, History with 19, and Chemistry with 17.
