South Korean tech giant Samsung has just announced its first 3-fold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. A recent report suggests that the device could be thinner than any other foldable phone the company has ever produced.
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold at the K-Tech Showcase event, which took place on the same day as the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit.
The device is equipped with two hinges that fold inward, allowing the screen to expand into a large panel. It is predicted that the screen can reach a size of more than 10 inches, operating equivalent to a tablet. Information from the Korea Economic Daily said that when opened, the Galaxy Z TriFold is "only about 4.2 mm thick", and when folded, the thickness ranges from 1.2-1.5 cm.

Since the device was displayed behind frosted protective glass and reporters were only allowed to take photos from a distance, the current measurements are for reference only. Even so, the Galaxy Z TriFold is still considered a significant technical achievement for Samsung.
The device's unfolded thickness of 4.2 mm is considered to be on par with the Galaxy Z Fold7, currently Samsung's thinnest foldable phone. When folded, the ideal theoretical thickness is about 12.6 mm (3 times). However, due to the hinge mechanism and the curvature of the screen, the actual thickness of the device may be between 13-14 mm.
If this information is accurate, the Galaxy Z TriFold will be thinner than all of Samsung's previous foldable phones, including the Fold4 (15.8 mm) and Fold3 (16 mm). In fact, the cross-section of the TriFold is predicted to be equivalent to the Fold5 (13.4 mm).
Prioritizing a slim design not only brings aesthetic value but also helps reduce weight, thereby providing a lighter and more comfortable grip experience for users.
For now, Samsung doesn’t seem to be directly competing with ultra-thin tri-fold smartphones like the Huawei Mate XT. Instead, the company is taking cautious steps, focusing on developing a foldable phone that ensures durability, convenience, and comfort when used.
This research and development is expected to pave the way for a global launch of the tri-folding device soon. However, rumors suggest that the device may be limited to certain markets at launch. Samsung is expected to announce details on specifications and availability in other markets when the product is officially launched.
