Sunnie Nguyen’s guardian daughter, Mary, said the girl had a “very pure heart” and was “kind.” Family members were extremely concerned about her welfare because Sunnie Nguyen was shy and had difficulty with language, according to the Daily Mail.

“When he first got here, he came out of his shell and opened up to the other students here and to our family, but when we went out in public, he still had to rely on others to speak for him.”

“When Sunnie first arrived, if she went out alone, she would almost immediately go home because she couldn’t speak English. We tried our best to teach her English and encourage her to speak English at home. She has improved a lot, but still not enough to cope with situations outside.”

Earlier, Australian media reported that a number of Vietnamese students, believed to be studying at Hamilton High School, had mysteriously disappeared separately within a month and one of them had not been contacted for more than four weeks. Adelaide police are investigating the incident.

Sunnie Nguyen, 17, is the fifth missing person. The 11th grader was last seen having dinner with her guardians around 7pm on Monday (January 8). However, when her landlady May Zervaas visited her around 11pm, Sunnie was gone.

The student is believed to have taken several belongings, including a backpack, laptop, important identification documents and some clothes. The family said there were no signs of forced entry and the rest of Sunnie's belongings were still in her room.

Sunnie's phone has been turned off and her social media accounts including Instagram and TikTok have been deleted. Sunnie has a bank account that can be used for transactions, but the Zervaas family is not aware of any withdrawals or transactions since Monday.

“All enquiries indicate that some of these young people may have travelled interstate and are still there,” a city police spokesman said.

“At this time, investigations have not concluded that these children are in any danger at this time. Police are working with federal police partners to help locate these young people,” the spokesperson added.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about Sunnie's whereabouts to contact South Australia Police on 131 444, using the designated reporting number 2400009568.

It is known that according to statistics published in April 2023, the number of Vietnamese students studying in Australia is about 24,000 people, ranking 5th among the countries with the largest number of international students.
