Child actors - flourishing or 'blooming early, fading late'?

VTC NewsVTC News26/02/2023

Recently, both Vietnamese television and cinema have seen the emergence of talented child actors. Despite their young age, these child stars have contributed to the success of famous film projects. But how to prevent them from becoming stars and then suddenly fading away in regret is a matter of concern for many people.

Child actors - flourishing or 'blooming early, fading late'? - 1

How to get a professional child cast is always a headache for filmmakers.

When a bright star becomes a "fade star"

In 2015, director Victor Vu "complained" that when making the film "I see yellow flowers on the green grass", he had to choose 50 photos from hundreds of photos sent in until the audition stage to finally find Thanh My, Thinh Vinh and Trong Khang. Or director Nhue Giang was discouraged many times when he had to search for child actors for 6 months for the role of Thu in the film "Mother's Soul". Director Dinh Tuan Vu when making the film "Uncle, Don't Marry My Mother" also had to organize many auditions, meeting more than 100 children to finally choose 2 children for the main roles.

As a rare film with an all-child cast, the crew of “Trang Ti” had to go through two casting rounds in 2018 and 2019 with more than 2,500 faces participating to choose the most suitable names. To find a child actor for the main role - the boy Ca in the movie “Cha cong con”, director Luong Dinh Dung “scoured” social networks, then traveled to many provinces and cities... to meet thousands of children, including children in orphanages. He even had to suddenly stop the project for a while when the boy playing the main role suddenly did not want to talk to anyone.

One of the reasons for the shortage of child actors is that many prominent faces, who were expected to "make a name" for the country's cinema, suddenly disappeared.

We can mention Hung Thuan, Phung Ngoc... in the movie "Dat Phuong Nam"; Ngoc Trai, Vu Long, Anh Dao... in the movie "Kinh Kinh Hoa"; Pham Gia Han in the movie "Cu va chim se sparrow"; Tran Thien Tu as little Ngo in the movie "Ao lua Ha Dong"; Ha Hong Van in the movie "Chit & Pi"; Nguyen Hong Quan in the movie "Lua Phat"; Tuan Anh in the movie "Chang trai nam ay", Angela Phuong Trinh in the movie "Nguoi me nhi"...

What these faces have in common is that they all had impressive roles when they were young, but could not maintain their appeal into adulthood and most of them were "dead roles".

Some people believe that the reason why child actors suddenly become famous and then disappear from Vietnamese showbiz is mainly due to the fact that the training of actors is still neglected, there is a lack of suitable children's films for them to show their talents, or when they grow up, they have few opportunities to appear on the screen. Another reason is that because they become famous too early, many child actors cannot escape the vanity of the halo, leading to distorted thinking, thinking that they are "big stars", leading to arrogance, pride, and then self-elimination.

"New wind" of Vietnamese screen

There are only a few more episodes left until “Don’t Make Me Angry.” However, when asked “who is your favorite actor in the movie?”, many people chose An Nhien, the child actress who plays Happy, the female lead’s daughter.

At the press conference to launch the movie “Don’t Make Me Angry”, both An Nhien and Tuan Phong, two actors in the movie, attracted everyone’s attention. The two children appeared next to the famous cast and happily interacted, innocently answering many questions from the journalists. This was something that had never happened at previous press conferences. It can be said that these two “child stars” contributed significantly to the success of the movie “Don’t Make Me Angry”.

Tuan Phong is 7 years old this year, and already has 3 famous film projects such as "Thuong ngay nang ve", "Tong gia ngo narrow"..., and An Nhien is only 5 years old but also has many famous film projects such as "Anh co phai dan ong khong", "Huong vi tinh than", "Dau tri"...

Previously, many Vietnamese films also caused a stir partly because of the impressive performances of child actors. They were Tan Anh as Thu in “Journey of Justice”, Suri Nha Vy as Hat De in “Mother Straw”, Ha Anh as Phuong Nam in “Flavor of Love”, Chu Diep Anh as Hoa in “Love for the Sunny Days”, Hong Nhung as Bong in “Rose on the Left Chest”…

In the film industry, Mai Cat Vi is widely recognized for her acting potential as the youngest actress to win the Golden Lotus Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film “Hai Phuong” by director Le Van Kiet. Participating in many Vietnamese films, especially recently “Bo Gia”, her expressive ability and natural acting style also brought child actress Ngan Chi the Best Supporting Actress award at the 22nd Vietnam Film Festival.

The recent movie “Maika: The Girl from Another Planet” also gave child actors Chu Diep Anh, Lai Truong Phu, and Tin Tin more opportunities to shine. While Chu Diep Anh is no longer a stranger to Vietnamese cinema, at the 2022 Kite Awards, 10-year-old child actor Lai Truong Phu unexpectedly surpassed popular faces like Manh Truong and Kieu Minh Tuan to win the Best Actor award in the movie “Maika - The Girl from Another Planet”.

It can be said that, if 5-7 years ago, finding young actors was as difficult as "finding gold in the sand", many crews even had to adjust the script because they could not find suitable actors, now, the number and quality of young talents for Vietnamese cinema has improved.
