Tea and chemistry scientist Dr Tim Bond, from the Tea Advisory Panel - a British health organisation, said: Many studies have shown that black tea in particular helps reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including cholesterol.
A systematic review of 11 trials, published in the Cochrane Medical Library, found that both black and green tea helped reduce levels of bad LDL cholesterol – the culprit behind health problems.
Dr. Bond explains: The reason tea has the ability to lower cholesterol is due to its content of catechin antioxidants.
A 2015 study gave mice water spiked with catechins and epigallocatechin gallate—another beneficial antioxidant found in green tea. After 56 days, the results showed that total cholesterol levels dropped by about 14.4 percent and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels dropped by 30.4 percent in mice on a high-cholesterol diet, according to Medical News Today.

Black tea may also have a positive effect on cholesterol.
What's more, tea can also help lower cholesterol levels after just 12 weeks. A study published in the scientific journal Preventive Medicine found that drinking 200ml of black tea three times a day reduced bad cholesterol levels after 12 weeks, according to Express .
According to Dr Bond, about two to three cups of tea a day is enough to reap the benefits. "Research shows that the ideal daily amount of tea to drink for a healthy heart is four to five cups a day," Dr Bond added.
