A mysterious explosion destroyed the railway tracks in the Russian border city of Bryansk, causing a freight train of about 20 cars to derail, according to local media. The incident occurred at 7:47 p.m. local time on May 2, Russian Railways said.
No casualties have been reported. Rescue workers are at the scene with track repair equipment. Authorities are investigating the cause.
This is the second derailment in the Bryansk region in two days. On May 1, a section of track was destroyed by a mysterious explosion near Unecha, closer to the Ukrainian border. A locomotive and seven freight cars carrying fuel and construction materials derailed, causing a fire in at least one engine. According to some sources, the train was likely hit by a mine.
Local authorities suspect sabotage. Ukraine has been accused of increasing shelling and sabotage attacks on Russian territory this week. The move is believed to be linked to Kiev’s planned counteroffensive with NATO support. On May 1, a rocket attack in the border village of Suzemka, Bryansk region, killed four people and injured two.
Ukraine has so far neither denied nor confirmed its role, but warned that Russia could face similar incidents in the future.
