Concerns about impact on price levels
According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the new electricity price increase will increase the living expenses of households (currently calculated according to 6 levels) from 4,550 VND to more than 65,000 VND/month depending on consumption. Specifically, households using less than 50kWh will pay an additional 4,550 VND; from 51-100kWh, it will increase by 9,250 VND; from 101-200kWh, it will increase by 20,150 VND; from 201-300kWh, it will increase by 33,950 VND; from 301-400kWh, it will increase by 49,250 VND; households using more than 400kWh may have to pay an additional 65,050 VND per month.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong Anh (a worker at Hoa Cam Industrial Park) shared: “The increase in electricity prices over time is inevitable, but the important thing is that it must be accompanied by improvements in quality. The hot season often has frequent power outages, which will greatly affect people's lives. In addition, every time electricity and gasoline prices increase, the market has a situation where the prices of goods "follow" the electricity price."
According to Mr. Le Van Huynh (Hai Chau district): “Due to the hot weather, my family has to use many air conditioners for the rooms, the electricity bill of nearly 2 million VND/month will now increase even more. Every time the electricity price increases, other expenses also increase. In the immediate future, we must tighten spending, save electricity, and reduce costs.”
This electricity price adjustment not only makes households "weigh and measure" their monthly bills but also poses a risk of spreading to the price level of goods and services. To reduce the cost burden for the disadvantaged, the Government continues to support monthly electricity bills for poor households and social policy households, equivalent to 30kWh/household/month (56,790 VND). Policy households that consume no more than 50kWh/month are also supported at a similar level. This policy is expected to contribute to ensuring social security and stability in the context of many price fluctuations.
Adjust electricity usage
Faced with the pressure of rising electricity prices, many households are highly aware of saving electricity. Ms. Ngo Anh Phuong (Lien Chieu District) shared: "My family has just built a house, so we have invested in energy-saving equipment, making the most of natural light, limiting the use of dryers and washing dishes by hand... to reduce electricity consumption". Ms. Nguyen Thi No, chief accountant of Inno Floors Joint Stock Company (Hoa Khanh Industrial Park Expansion) said that the company is paying about 200 million VND for electricity each month. With a 4.8% increase, the cost will increase by about 10 million VND. Many businesses are shifting to investing in modern technology and energy-saving solutions.
Danang Rubber Joint Stock Company (DRC) has installed a rooftop solar power system with a capacity of nearly 4MWp, replaced all fluorescent lamps with LED lamps and applied German and Italian technology to production, helping to significantly save electricity costs. Other initiatives such as adjusting production processes, installing frequency converters to control pressure, or cutting cooling equipment capacity, etc. have also been strongly implemented.
According to Mr. Ngo Le Quang, Director of Hanoi Urban Environment Company Limited (Urenco) - Central Branch, in response to fluctuations in electricity prices, the company has proactively adjusted working shifts, reduced electricity usage during peak hours and considered investing in solar power to stabilize long-term costs.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuan, Deputy Director of Da Nang Power Company Limited (PC Da Nang), in the dry season this year, the load capacity in Da Nang could peak at 760MW, an increase of nearly 11% over the same period last year. However, EVN still ensures sufficient power supply for the city. However, to limit the risk of high electricity bills and reduce system load, PC Da Nang calls on people to monitor meter readings via the EVNCPC CSKH application or Zalo, and apply measures such as cleaning equipment regularly, choosing energy-saving products, and turning off equipment when not in use.
By 2025, PC Da Nang aims to save at least 2% of electricity consumption. In addition to communication and propaganda programs in schools and businesses, the company also organizes the IoT contest "Conquer the challenge - Convenient green living" and social activities such as free transformer station repair for customers.
According to Mr. Tuan, to avoid the effect of electricity price increase leading to increase in many other commodities, first of all, it is necessary to have synchronous participation from the State, enterprises and consumers. In addition to encouraging electricity saving, authorities need to closely monitor market fluctuations and strictly handle acts of taking advantage to unreasonably increase prices. At the same time, there needs to be a mechanism to support enterprises in converting technology, reducing costs and stabilizing prices.
