'Vietnam team will fight to beat Philippines, soon enter the semi-finals'

The Vietnamese team will face the Philippines at 8:00 p.m. on December 18 at Rizal Memorial Stadium, in the fourth match of Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup. With 6 full points thanks to 2 wins, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team are at the top of the table, while the Philippines is in third place with 2 points (drawing both matches).

If Vietnam defeats the Philippines, they will enter the semi-finals one round early as group winners. This is also the goal the whole team is aiming for, to easily calculate in the final match.

Coach Kim Sang-sik

Coach Kim Sang-sik affirmed: "The Vietnamese team is very hopeful and ready, despite the difficult schedule. The whole team has not lost in the group stage, so we will try to win to enter the semi-finals soon. We are really ready to prepare for tomorrow's match."

The Vietnamese team has won all five of their most recent encounters with the Philippines, scoring 12 goals and conceding five. At the opponent's Rizal Memorial Stadium alone, Quang Hai and his teammates have also won both of their most recent away matches.

However, the challenge for the Vietnamese team will come on the artificial pitch in Manila. With very little time to prepare for the matches, adapting to the new grass will be a challenge for Mr. Kim and his team.

"Some members of the Vietnamese team have experience playing on this field. In Korea, we also practice on artificial turf. At the same time, the coaching staff has a plan to remind the players to play at their best," coach Kim Sang-sik assessed.

The Korean strategist helped the Vietnamese team defeat the Philippines 3-2 in their first match in June. Although Mr. Kim said that both Vietnam and the Philippines are very different from 6 months ago, the goal of the Vietnamese team is still to win.

Vietnam team won all 5 recent matches against Philippines

"The victory against the Philippines in June was not easy. However, this victory was very important in helping the players strengthen their confidence and build tactics. Now the preparation is different. 6 months ago, we only had 1 month to train our players for the match against the Philippines, but now, we have more time and have more factors. The Philippines also have many differences in terms of force. However, we are still aiming for the same result as in June.

Although the Vietnamese team only won 1-0 against Indonesia, we are still very satisfied and confident for the match against the Philippines," said Mr. Kim.

The hard-fought victory over the Philippines six months ago also provided Kim Sang-sik and his team with a lesson to play better in this important rematch.

"In the previous match, I had no experience against the Philippines. We didn't have much understanding, which led to trouble against our opponents. Now, the difference comes from playing on artificial turf. The Philippines is a strong team and we really have to fight for tomorrow's match," coach Kim Sang-sik concluded.
