Strange attack from Ukrainian UAV makes Russian air defense stunned

The Ukrainian UAV, after detecting the target, did not attack immediately, but instead clung to the target to move to a gathering position to increase its lethality.

On the Ukrainian front line, an attack stunned observers. A Ukrainian UAV landed directly on the 9A316 launcher of the Russian Buk-M2 complex, traveled with the target for more than 15 km, and then detonated. The strike was so perfect it was cruel - a testament to the leap forward in the art of unmanned warfare.

In the video , the Ukrainian UAV sticks to the body of a moving Russian Buk-M2 vehicle. Tactical data is still transmitted to the command center every second. The “SYNC” icon appears on the control interface - confirming that the UAV is using AI algorithms to synchronize its movements.

The 9A316 - an indispensable link in the Buk-M2 air defense system, carries four 9M317 missiles and also takes on the task of loading them. Some of its versions are capable of independent firing. The fact that the UAV can quietly approach and land on this vehicle shows the stability and control skills of the UAV at a rare high level of the Ukrainian forces.

Buk-M2 is Russia's main medium-range air defense system, with a range of 45 km, using the 9S36 radar and active guidance missiles. The 9A317/9A316 vehicles usually operate in formations of four, and are capable of independent combat even when electronically jammed, so UAV penetration is extremely rare.

When they arrived at the deployment location, the Russian soldiers did not recognize the mysterious “passenger” on the vehicle. A vigilant soldier approached to check, took a photo, then poked it with a stick and that was the moment the “battlefield fireworks” exploded. The violent explosion caused the entire group of soldiers to panic and flee.

Video analysis shows at least two UAVs engaged simultaneously. One detonated on the primary target, while the other may have coordinated guidance or attacked other vehicles. This is evidence of the multi-layered UAV fusion tactic that Ukraine is developing.
7.jpg
The UAV is said to be a small model, but integrated with advanced sensors. Some experts believe it may use optical-infrared sensors and inertial navigation systems, helping it maintain stability when clinging to a moving vehicle, which is very difficult for conventional commercial UAVs.
8.jpg
Notably, in front of the 9A316 vehicle appeared another vehicle - suspected to be the 9A317M of the Buk-M3, a more modern version with its own radar and 9R31M missiles with a range of 70 km. If true, this is the first evidence of Buk-M2 and Buk-M3 coordinating mixed operations, something rarely seen in Russian forces.
9.jpg
The Buk-M3 uses a vertical launcher, has a fast reaction speed and excellent electronic countermeasures. However, the Buk-M2's 9A316 loading vehicle is not fully compatible with the Buk-M3. The parallel appearance of two variants in one unit suggests that Russia may be temporarily combining formations or compensating for combat losses.
10.jpg
The incident exposed a gap in Russia’s air defense architecture: a mismatch of generations that makes coordination, protection, and response difficult. Ukrainian UAVs exploited that gap, attacking from within, a typical asymmetrical warfare style that makes it difficult for the enemy to counter.
11.jpg
For Ukraine, this is not just a physical blow, but also a psychological and technological one. UAVs are no longer simply suicide weapons, but tools for penetrating, locating and destroying precisely within the enemy’s air defense system. The Lasar group has previously tested similar tactics, but never with such sophistication.
12.jpg
Analysts say this is a turning point in Ukraine’s UAV warfare thinking: from using single UAVs, they have switched to artificial intelligence, multi-layered and deep penetration warfare. When “steel shields” like Buk are attacked right on their own body, technological and tactical superiority in the skies of Eastern Europe is gradually tilting towards Kiev.
