Wide open space in Vietnam - Estonia trade relations

(Chinhphu.vn) - Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Estonia has been modest. However, in recent years, bilateral trade turnover has shown positive signs, opening up new development space in relations with this Nordic country.

Vietnam mainly exports to Estonia products such as plastics and plastic products, fruits and nuts, tea, coffee, spices, toys and iron and steel products - items with competitive advantages and stable consumer demand in the Northern European market.

With a population of about 1.5 million, Estonia is not a large market in terms of consumption, but it is an important gateway to the Nordic region and the European common market (EU). Import-export turnover between the two countries has remained below 100 million USD/year in recent years but is showing a steady growth trend, especially from 2022 onwards.

Data from the General Department of Customs shows that total two-way trade turnover in 2024 will reach 73.8 million USD, up 17.7% compared to 2023. Of which, exports from Vietnam will reach 50.9 million USD, up 32.2%; imports from Estonia will reach 22.8 million USD, down slightly by 5.3%.

Notably, in the first 4 months of 2025, the total bilateral trade turnover reached 24.06 million USD, up 56.3% over the same period last year. This is an impressive growth rate reflecting a strong recovery and a signal of expanding cooperation between the two economies . Specifically, Vietnam's exports to Estonia reached 16.6 million USD (up 46.1%), while imports from Estonia to Vietnam reached 7.3 million USD (up 85.3%).

The structure of import and export goods between Vietnam and Estonia is currently highly complementary, reflected in the typical products of each country. Vietnam mainly exports to Estonia products such as plastics and plastic products, fruits and nuts, tea, coffee, spices, toys and steel products - products with competitive advantages and stable consumer demand in the Northern European market.

In contrast, Estonia mainly exports to Vietnam iron and steel products, electrical machinery and equipment, wood and wood products - items that serve the needs of domestic industrial production and construction. This is a favorable foundation to further promote a balanced and sustainable trade relationship between the two sides.

EVFTA - Golden opportunity to expand the market

Vietnam and Estonia are both members of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). This is an opportunity for businesses of both countries to expand cooperation, take advantage of tariff incentives and access markets with lower technical barriers.

In addition to trade in goods, Estonia is also known as one of the global pioneers in digital transformation, e- government and the technology startup ecosystem. This is an area that Vietnam is particularly interested in developing. Therefore, bilateral trade relations do not stop at traditional import and export but can also expand to areas such as smart logistics, digital government, information technology training and support for innovative startups.

Previously, in November 2024, a high-ranking Estonian delegation led by Minister of Enterprise and Information Technology Tiit Riisalo paid an official visit to Vietnam to promote cooperation in the fields of digital transformation, e-government and innovative startups.

During the visit, the Estonian delegation worked with many Vietnamese agencies, organizations and businesses. Estonia - a country known as a "digital government powerhouse" with more than 99% of public services provided online - expressed its desire to share experiences, transfer technology, promote cooperation in training IT human resources and accompany Vietnam in the process of building a digital government and digital society.
