Support the immune system

In the chilly weather of the last month of the year, a warm glass of lemon-ginger water is considered an ideal choice to start the day. Not only does it help keep the body warm from the inside, but the combination of vitamin-rich lemon and ginger with strong medicinal properties offers many significant health benefits.

This is also a habit recommended by many experts because it is safe, easy to do, and suitable for most age groups.

Lemon-ginger water is a low-calorie yet nutrient-rich beverage. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , a medium-sized lemon (approximately 67g) contains nearly 20 calories, 7g of carbohydrates, 1.9g of fiber, and many minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, as well as 19.5mg of vitamin C, meeting about one-fifth of the daily requirement.

When combined with fresh ginger, this drink adds bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, improve blood circulation, and aid digestion. A typical glass of lemon-ginger-honey water contains only about 25 to 40 calories, making it suitable for those who want a gentle energy boost in the morning.

During the cold season, lemon-ginger water is often preferred for its ability to help prevent colds and flu. Ginger contains active compounds such as gingerol and shogaol that inhibit respiratory bacteria, warm the lungs, and improve blood circulation.

When ingested, ginger essential oil helps dilate capillaries, increase peripheral blood flow, and create a noticeable warming sensation. Vitamin C in lemon, on the other hand, stimulates the body to produce white blood cells, a key element in the immune response.

Drinking a glass of warm lemon-ginger water as soon as you experience symptoms like a sore throat, chills, or nasal congestion can help soothe the respiratory lining and prevent a cold from worsening.

Good for digestion

In addition to boosting immunity, lemon-ginger water also significantly supports the digestive system.

Cold weather often leads people to eat more protein- and fat-rich foods, which can easily cause bloating or indigestion. Ginger stimulates the stomach to secrete digestive enzymes, promoting gastric emptying and reducing feelings of bloating.

The citric acid in lemons, combined with warm water, helps activate bowel movements in the morning, supports the liver and kidneys in naturally eliminating toxins, and improves energy metabolism.

A glass of warm lemon-ginger water on chilly days can significantly reduce bloating and indigestion after meals, while also providing a comfortable and warming feeling to the body.

Notes on usage

For optimal results, users should pay attention to the dosage and preparation method.

Ginger has potent medicinal properties, so healthy adults should not consume more than 4g of ginger per day. Pregnant women should only consume less than 1g per day and should consult a doctor before use.

Using too much ginger can cause heartburn, diarrhea, or mucosal irritation. With lemon, excessively high water temperatures can destroy vitamin C and create bitterness; therefore, it's best to boil the ginger first, then let the water cool to around 40-50°C before adding lemon juice and honey if needed.

The best time to drink lemon-ginger water is in the morning after a light meal, avoiding it in the evening to prevent increased heart rate or difficulty sleeping.

Certain individuals should exercise caution when drinking lemon-ginger water, including those with peptic ulcers, those experiencing acute hypertension, and those with high fever without chills. These groups are particularly susceptible to irritation from the spiciness of ginger or the acidity of lemon.
