Mai Hoa Commune has planted nearly 5 hectares of cucumbers in Van Giang village 1 and Bong Giang village 2. Tai Loc melon variety (grown according to VietGAP standards, applying 100% organic techniques), the plant grows quickly, bearing fruit after 30-35 days.
In village 1, the melon growing cooperative has 7 participating households. Currently, the cooperative is entering the harvest stage, with an output of about 500kg/day, with a stable selling price to traders at 15,000 VND/kg.
Before implementing the model, Mai Hoa Commune People's Committee organized for participating households to visit and learn from some effective cucumber growing models in Tuyen Quang province. After that, the commune signed a memorandum of understanding with Que Vung Mien Cucumber Company Limited ( Bac Ninh ) and Nhat Hang General Production and Trading Cooperative, to ensure stable output for the products. 2 cooperative groups with a total of 11 members were established, directly producing and complying with technical processes in the direction of VietGAP.
Mr. Dinh Van Nghia - Head of the cucumber growing cooperative said: "This type of melon can be grown 2-3 times a year. Participating households are supported with seeds, cultivation techniques and committed to consuming the products. After harvest, the melons are purchased directly by traders in the fields, mainly consumed in Hanoi and the northern provinces. Currently, the demand for cucumbers is very large, we harvest and sell them all, there is not enough product to meet the market demand".
To help cucumber plants grow evenly, produce high yields and ensure output quality, households in the cooperative strictly follow the care process right from the planting stage. Melons are grown on trellises, using a drip irrigation system to maintain stable moisture. At the same time, organic fertilizer is applied periodically, weed-proof tarps are covered, and pesticides are minimized. The tree begins to flower after about 30 days, at this time people proceed to prune leaves and young fruits to concentrate nutrients, helping the fruit to develop evenly, crispy, and beautiful. Each tree produces about 30 fruits, with a density of 6-7 fruits/kg. Pest control is mainly by manual and biological methods, ensuring product safety for consumers.
According to growers, the cool climate, local soil resources and stable irrigation water sources are favorable conditions that help "Tai Loc" cucumbers adapt well to Mai Hoa land, thereby giving high productivity and superior quality compared to many other areas.
The melon growing model is organized in a chain from input to output, with the participation of businesses, authorities and people. Concentrated production and proactive marketing help reduce risks, improve economic efficiency and create jobs for rural workers.
Cucumbers are not only a solution to increase income for people in Mai Hoa commune but also open up opportunities for sustainable rural economic development. With high productivity, quick harvest and stable market value, the cucumber growing model promises to become a key crop, contributing to diversifying local agricultural products and strengthening the economic value chain.
Mr. Tran Manh Hung - Chairman of the Mai Hoa Commune Farmers' Association said: "The locality has identified cucumber as a key crop due to its suitability to natural conditions and high economic efficiency. The Farmers' Association coordinates with functional sectors to provide technical support, organize chain production and connect stable consumption. According to calculations, after 35-40 days of planting, the melon will be harvested with an average yield of about 50 tons/ha. With 5ha, the estimated output is 250 tons, with a total value of about 1.2 billion VND. After deducting costs, the profit is about 700 million VND, much higher than that of traditional crops."
