Including Literature in medical admissions

Công LuậnCông Luận24/05/2023

This year, 4 non-public universities have just announced admission to medical school using Literature.

Specifically, Van Lang University recruits medical students using 3 traditional combinations A00, B00 and D08 and 1 new combination D12 (Literature, Chemistry, English).

Is the inclusion of literature in medical admissions a breakthrough or a breakthrough?

If doctors can sympathize and look at patients with their hearts, it will also be a breakthrough in medical training (illustrative photo - internet source).

Meanwhile, Vo Truong Toan University ( Hau Giang ) and Tan Tao University (Long An) use combination B03 (Mathematics, Literature, Biology) in the method of considering high school graduation exam scores to recruit for this major.

Duy Tan University also recruits medical students using 4 combinations: A16 (Math, Natural Sciences , Literature), B00, D90 and D08.

The inclusion of Literature in medical admissions is receiving much debate.

In the context of medical ethics becoming a hot topic when many people working in the medical industry are arrested and prosecuted for violations related to bidding and purchasing, the fact that the medical industry uses Literature scores as a secondary criterion for admission is considered by many to be a breakthrough.

Specifically, according to National Assembly Delegate Nguyen Thi Viet Nga ( Hai Duong Delegation), the fact that universities include Literature in medical admissions is an innovation and a breakthrough.

However, any breakthrough has potential risks and requires close management and supervision to avoid "a hundred flowers blooming" and the appearance of many strange combinations in the medical industry.

"Recently, society has raised the issue of medical ethics and the way doctors treat patients. That is the reason why schools decided to include Literature in the admissions exam," said Ms. Nga.

Meanwhile, explaining the inclusion of Literature in the admissions exam, a representative of Duy Tan University said that hospitals hope to recruit doctors who are not only good at their profession but also know how to sympathize and share with patients.

According to this representative, the school identified two important subjects for the medical profession: Mathematics and Biology, but instead of only taking the Biology score, the school used a natural science test consisting of 3 subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, then added Literature to the combination. People who are good at literature are often sympathetic, sharing and compassionate.

Contrary to the above opinions, some experts are also worried that medicine is a science that requires high precision, so the first condition is to have good knowledge of natural sciences.

In fact, love, compassion, and willingness to share are the results of a long-term education process at school. They are soft skills that every profession must cultivate, not just medicine. It is not true that people who are good at literature are more compassionate.

Many experts also expressed concern about the choice of Literature subject only to serve the school's enrollment because if medical students are only recruited through traditional blocks, non-public schools will find it difficult to compete with schools that have a tradition of training.

Dr. Tran Duc Bao, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hue University), has the following opinion: "In medical admissions, Literature is only a secondary subject. What needs to be considered is whether the combination of subjects offered by the schools for admission includes Biology or not - this subject is essential and indispensable. If the combination of subjects offered for admissions does not include Biology, we need to blow the whistle immediately."

Through the above opinions, it can be seen that Literature is also very necessary for medical entrance. However, it must be a secondary criterion. If it is the main criterion for admission, all worries can happen and in the future, curing diseases by "belief" may become a reality.
