On October 21, Doan Ket Primary and Secondary School ( Kon Tum City, Kon Tum) said it had reported to the People's Committee of Doan Ket Commune about the situation where the road to H'Nor school was continuously flooded due to heavy rain, posing a danger to students.
Students and teachers in danger
According to Doan Ket Primary and Secondary School, H'Nor school is located next to a stream about 4 m wide and 5 m deep. During the rainy season, the stream water rises, causing flooding and cutting off the road leading to the school. This is also the main road connecting Hnor village with the center of Doan Ket commune.
At the culvert crossing the stream, there are no guardrails on either side of the road. Part of the slope near the culvert’s mouth has collapsed, and the water has swirled deep into the roadway, causing a gap in the road’s roof. The landslide is about 3 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1 meter deep.
During the rainy season, students have to take a detour to get to H'Nor school.
According to Ms. Y Hon (40 years old, in H'Nor village), this year, her first child is in first grade at H'Nor school. Every day when it rains heavily, the stream water rises, overflows the road to knee-deep and flows rapidly. The house is only 50 meters from the school, but Ms. Hon has to take her child on a detour of more than 2 kilometers to ensure safety.
"My house is near the school, so in the dry season, my child walks. But when it rains heavily, the road in front of my house is flooded and the water flows rapidly, making it very dangerous for people and vehicles to pass. Therefore, I have to take a detour to take my child to school. We hope that the authorities will pay attention, reopen the drainage system, and repair the road to ensure the safety of people, especially students," said Ms. Y Hon.
According to teachers at H'Nor school, whenever it rains heavily, the water flowing through the road in front of H'Nor village school is very strong. However, in order to get to class on time, teachers have to get off their vehicles and walk across, and many people fall into the water.
Recommend early remedial measures
According to Mr. Thai Khac Hoa, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum City, there are 74 students studying at H'Nor school. In the immediate future, the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum City has requested the People's Committee of Doan Ket Commune to install warning signs for landslides and fence off the landslide site.
Landslide causing cleft palate on the road
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Doan Ket Commune, said that the road to H'Nor village was built a long time ago. The cause of flooding at the above location is due to the culvert across the small stream. Whenever it rains heavily, the stream water cannot drain through the culvert in time and overflows onto the road, flowing rapidly, causing unsafety for people passing by, especially students. In addition, the downstream of the stream is adjacent to the H'Nor school campus but there is no embankment to protect it, so it is very dangerous for students.
To ensure the safety of people and students during heavy rains and floods, the People's Committee of Doan Ket commune directed and deployed militia forces to stand guard and block off areas. From there, people were warned about areas with strong currents to avoid traveling to ensure safety and timely handling of emergency situations. At the same time, officials were assigned to take charge of the situation, arrange barriers and propagate people to proactively take their children to school during heavy rains and strong currents.
The People's Committee of Doan Ket Commune has requested the People's Committee of Kon Tum City to consider and balance funding sources to soon invest in building embankments combined with anti-erosion ditches and drainage box culverts. At the same time, install a railing system and reinforce the embankment to prevent erosion in the downstream area to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
