European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the European Union (EU) will enforce all of its digital rules without exception.
Speaking to Politico, Ursula von der Leyen stressed that big tech companies like X, Meta, Apple and TikTok should know that the EU is ready to fully enforce the union's digital regulations regardless of which country the company is from and who runs those companies.
The EU applies its rules fairly and proportionately, she said. The EU is concerned with protecting its citizens. The European Commission is currently considering a fine against X after concluding its investigation into the platform in January.
Ms. Ursula von der Leyen made the above statement in the context that EU digital laws such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) are facing some criticism from senior members of the US administration.
About two months before the US presidential election, Mr. JD Vance, now Vice President, pointed out a direct link between the US's continued participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the EU's digital regulations.
Mr. Vance warned that the US could withdraw from NATO if the EU applied these regulations to US platforms.
Analysts say that under such pressure, the EU may suspend implementation of those regulations, especially in the context of moving towards discussing the tariff issue with the US administration.
US President Donald Trump has announced a 20% reciprocal tariff on goods from the EU.
Currently, this tax is being postponed for 90 days, but the tax on aluminum and steel will still be applied from March 12 and the tax on cars and auto parts will be applied from April 3./.
