Recently, there have been some customer complaints about the sudden increase in electricity bills in August 2025 in some localities in the North and Central regions. Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said it has issued instructions to power corporations (PCUs) to review and handle customer complaints.
Specifically, in response to the complaints of some customers about the high electricity bills in August 2025, the Electricity Corporations have compiled specific statistics and shown that nationwide, there are a total of more than 3.2 million customers out of a total of 31.88 million residential customers whose electricity consumption in August increased by 30% or more compared to July (equivalent to a rate of more than 10% of the total number of customers).
According to data from the Customer Care Centers of the Electricity Corporations as well as monitoring feedback on social networks, up to now, there have been over 500 customer feedbacks about the high electricity bills in August. The feedback information has been urgently reviewed and clarified to respond and inform customers. EVN said that basically, last August, especially in the first half of the month, many areas in the North experienced a period of extremely hot weather leading to a very high increase in electricity consumption. Even on August 4, 2025, electricity consumption in the North was at a record high ever.
In addition to explaining information about bills, power units also increase instructions for customers to install applications (according to each power company) to conveniently monitor their daily electricity usage. According to statistics from the Northern Power Company, in August 2025, the 19006769 switchboard recorded 171,723 incoming calls, of which the number of received calls was 150,387 (87.58%). The number of calls is higher during hot weather, so at these times, customers' calls may not be received promptly.
In the content posted on social networks reflecting on electricity bills, there are also many posts or groups that do not verify the specific information of customers, so it is impossible to specifically find out the authenticity of the information. Some information reflected is not true or is posted for the purpose of attracting views and selling online.
In addition, there are many cases where customers reflect that they are not customers who buy electricity directly from EVN but buy electricity from electricity wholesale and retail organizations. These organizations still use mechanical meters, have to enter data manually and therefore still have a higher risk of errors than electronic meters in terms of recording wrong meter readings. According to preliminary statistics, there are currently 521 electricity wholesale and retail organizations nationwide, of which the Northern region alone has up to 481 organizations.
EVN affirms that for EVN's electricity customers, electronic meters have now been installed for most customers. Installing electronic meters and reading data remotely helps to record meter readings without having to manually enter data (as when using mechanical meters), thereby significantly reducing errors because the data is updated automatically, and the data also does not have subjective human intervention.
Through initial review, no errors were found in the information reflecting the high electricity bill in August and currently the review and specific inspection of the reflected contents on the electricity bill is still being carried out.
