Hiep Luc Commune promotes biosafety livestock farming, aiming for sustainable production
After the African swine fever outbreak in 2019, Hiep Luc commune (Thai Nguyen) promoted the application of biosafety procedures in livestock farming, considering this a key solution to prevent disease.
Every month, the commune veterinary force organizes periodic disinfection spraying, instructs people to separate clean and dirty water in the barn, sprinkles lime to disinfect the walkways, and composts waste before discharging it into the environment. Thanks to that, in the first 6 months of 2025, the commune did not record any outbreaks, and the vaccination rate for infectious diseases was high.
According to breeders, the cost of disease prevention is not high but requires perseverance. A 100-pig cage needs an investment of 15-20 million VND to install a disinfection system, ventilation fans, insect screens and a stomping pool, along with several million VND/month for chemicals and electricity and water. “Disease prevention costs less than 5% of the total cost, but if you ignore it, you can lose everything,” said Mr. Thiep, a breeder in the commune.
Despite the obvious effectiveness, the model's replication is still slow because many small households lack capital and are afraid to borrow from commercial banks due to high interest rates. The commune government proposed to build a separate credit package for disease prevention infrastructure such as closed barns, clean water, and disinfection equipment, while organizing technical training to help small-scale livestock farmers gradually shift to a safe, medium-scale model, aiming for sustainable production and being more proactive in the face of disease risks.
