High pork prices cause meat imports to increase sharply in the first 3 months of 2025
In the Central and Central Highlands regions, prices increased by VND1,000 in Lam Dong and Binh Thuan to VND74,000/kg, the highest in the region. Neighboring provinces Ninh Thuan and Dak Lak still maintained prices of VND73,000/kg. The lowest live hog price of VND68,000/kg remained in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh. The remaining provinces and cities commonly ranged from VND69,000 to VND70,000/kg.
In the South, the price of live pigs increased by VND1,000 in Tra Vinh to VND75,000/kg, equal to Ben Tre and Dong Nai and also the highest in the country. In addition, Vinh Long and Soc Trang both increased by VND1,000 to VND74,000/kg. The price of live pigs in the remaining provinces and cities is generally from VND73,000 - VND74,000/kg.
The average price of live pigs nationwide is 70,900 VND/kg. CP Vietnam Company increased the selling price of live pigs in the North by 1,000 VND to 70,000 VND/kg and in the South it is 74,000 VND/kg.
The price of live pigs in the southern region remains high due to a shortage of supply. This has created conditions for meat imports to increase sharply in recent times. According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, by the end of the first quarter of 2025, imports of meat and meat by-products reached 437 million USD, an increase of 18% over the same period last year.
In Ho Chi Minh City, as the big holidays are approaching, pork consumption is showing signs of a slight increase. The amount of pigs arriving at wholesale markets is nearly 4,700/day. The price of pork pieces ranges from 86,000 - 90,000 VND/kg depending on the quality. Meanwhile, in supermarkets and traditional markets, common retail prices of meat are pig tails at 235,000 VND/kg, pork chops at 115,000 VND/kg, thighs at 139,000 VND/kg, pork belly at 213,000 VND/kg, pork belly without ribs at 265,000 VND/kg.../.
