In general, the live hog market on May 27 recorded positive signs when prices increased again in many key localities in all three regions. Although most regions remained stable, the upward adjustments contributed to raising the ceiling price in the North and the South, in which the South stood out with the re-establishment of the peak of 76,000 VND/kg - the highest in the country at present.
Consumers wary of pork as African swine fever outbreaks
African swine fever is becoming more and more complicated in many localities in Nghe An. Although there have been official recommendations from the authorities not to “turn their backs” on pork, the reality shows that consumers are still more hesitant and cautious in using this familiar food, according to Nghe An newspaper.
When Thanh Chuong district became a “hot spot” for swine fever, meat sales were unsold. Even though I agreed to reduce the price by 10-20% compared to before and the meat I sold had clear quarantine certificates, but as soon as they heard about the epidemic, they turned their backs, no matter how I explained it, it was useless.
The fear of pork amid the outbreak is not only seen among housewives but also spread to restaurants. Slow sales, falling prices but still difficult to consume pork have put considerable pressure on small-scale farmers and businesses.
According to the Nghe An Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, African swine fever is not transmitted to humans, and pork can be used normally if it is inspected, slaughtered according to the correct procedures, and stored hygienically. However, concerns among the people are still difficult to dispel.
The current sluggish pork market is the result of a chain of broken trust – from production, slaughter, transportation to consumption. Even if the meat is clean and safe, if the control is not tight and the information is unclear, consumers will still choose to be defensive. In that context, improving disease prevention and control capacity, publicly and transparently publicizing qualified slaughterhouses and reputable businesses, along with strengthening market inspections are key solutions.
