On the morning of April 1, the price of live pigs in the Northern region continued to record a decrease of 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg, with many localities down to 65,000 VND/kg.
In this area, traders are currently purchasing live pigs at prices ranging from 65,000 - 66,000 VND/kg.
Pig price in Central Highlands
In the Central Highlands, the price of live pigs was slightly adjusted, down 1,000 VND/kg in Ha Tinh , Quang Tri and Ninh Thuan provinces, bringing the price to 65,000 VND/kg, 66,000 VND/kg and 72,000 VND/kg respectively.
Currently, the price of live pigs in the Central region fluctuates from 65,000 - 73,000 VND/kg. In which, the two provinces with the highest prices in the region are Lam Dong and Binh Thuan , at 73,000 VND/kg.
Southern pig price
In the South, the price of live pigs has also been adjusted down in many provinces and cities. Currently, the purchase price in this area fluctuates from 72,000 - 76,000 VND/kg.
After the latest adjustment, Binh Phuoc and Ben Tre recorded prices of VND72,000/kg, while Vinh Long dropped to VND73,000/kg. Kien Giang is currently at VND74,000/kg, Can Tho is at VND75,000/kg, and Ca Mau is down to VND76,000/kg.
Reasons for the decrease in pig prices
According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in February, Vietnam spent more than 373 million USD, equivalent to about 9.5 billion VND, to import meat. Compared to the same period last year, this figure increased by nearly 41%, according to a source from Tri Thuc - Znews.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association, said that the decision to spend nearly VND10,000 billion to import meat has had a strong impact on the domestic market, causing the price of live pigs to drop significantly.
The continuous decline in live pig prices in recent days has created many difficulties for domestic livestock businesses.
Mr. Doan said that two weeks ago, the price of piglets was still high, around 3 million VND/pig. Therefore, when the price of live pigs plummets like now, pig farmers will certainly suffer losses.
After a period of sharp increases in retail pork prices, the Government decided to import frozen pork in large quantities to stabilize domestic prices. However, Mr. Doan commented that frozen pork should not be imported in large quantities.
“When importing as usual, the domestic price of live pigs will be severely affected. Agencies need to limit the import quantity so that domestic livestock enterprises can operate stably. It is forecasted that in the coming days, the price of live pigs will continue to decrease deeply to below 70,000 VND/kg,” Mr. Doan added.
Disease control measures
The People's Committee of Bac Ninh province has just issued a document directing agencies, units and localities to focus on synchronously implementing solutions to prevent and control epidemics and speed up the vaccination progress for livestock.
In particular, the Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with relevant units to build disease-free livestock areas. In addition, it is necessary to organize disease surveillance, especially in areas that have had epidemics or are at high risk, to detect early and thoroughly handle and prevent the spread of the disease.
In addition, the government requires strict handling of cases of trading, transporting, and consuming sick or suspected sick pigs, as well as the act of dumping dead animals into the environment, causing pollution.
In addition, epidemic prevention and hygiene measures also need to be strengthened. Farmers are encouraged to apply biosecurity farming procedures, periodically disinfect high-risk areas, old outbreaks, markets, collection points, and live animal trading establishments.
At the same time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is responsible for coordinating with localities to guide farmers in choosing effective vaccines to prevent African swine fever.
Livestock farmers and farms forced to destroy pigs due to disease also need to strictly implement disinfection and sterilization measures to eliminate pathogens and prevent the risk of spreading to the environment.
