Google Puts Ads Into AI Search Mode To Go Head-To-Head With ChatGPT

This new move by Google is considered an important milestone in the increasingly tense battle between the two technology giants, as both aim to gain the upper hand in the era of generative AI.

Unlike the traditional approach, Google’s AI Mode aims to provide a more natural interactive experience instead of just showing links. Answers are presented in rich media such as videos , audio or charts, and ads appear right in the answer content instead of being separated as before – a strategy that is considered risky but in line with the trend.

The future of AI-powered advertising is not about tomorrow, it’s about today. We’re redefining advertising and shopping: They must be non-interruptible experiences that help users discover products and services, ” said Vidhya Srinivasan, Vice President of Ads and Commerce at Google.

Advertising revenue has long been a major part of Google’s finances, accounting for more than two-thirds of its total revenue. But the rapid growth of AI chatbots—which limit advertising to keep the user experience seamless—has many Wall Street investors worried about the company’s long-term revenue prospects.

Faced with that reality, putting ads into AI Mode is not only to protect Google's core business model but also a move that is considered a strong "response" to ChatGPT - OpenAI's tool that is increasingly attracting users thanks to its ability to answer concisely, accurately and intelligently.

Google began testing new ad formats based on data from Overviews, the AI-generated summary at the top of search results, a year ago, the company said. Overviews now serves more than 1.5 billion users globally, and Google is rolling out the ads on desktop in the U.S. after seeing success on mobile.

Along with the changes to search advertising, Google also introduced a series of new AI tools specifically for advertisers, with the aim of streamlining the process of creating online marketing content – ​​a similar direction to the recent strategy of Meta, Facebook's parent company.

In the US market, these new features will help businesses set up more effective promotional campaigns thanks to artificial intelligence, while operating a system capable of detecting new search trends and improving the ability to convert purchasing behavior.
