Pepper prices remain high

Updated at 5:00 a.m. on May 22, 2025, domestic pepper prices were basically stable at high prices; in Dak Lak and Dak Nong, they decreased slightly by VND 1,000/kg compared to the previous session. The average pepper price in key localities is at VND 151,100/kg.

In Gia Lai province, pepper prices today remain unchanged compared to yesterday's slight decrease, currently at 150,000 VND/kg.

Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc areas did not record major fluctuations, remaining stable with the purchase price in both localities currently at 151,000 VND/kg.

For Dak Lak and Dak Nong, today's price decreased slightly by 1,000 VND/kg compared to the previous session, currently traders are purchasing at 152,000 VND/kg.

According to data from the International Pepper Community (IPC) released at 5:00 a.m. on May 22, 2025, world pepper prices are currently stable, with no major changes compared to yesterday's fluctuations.

Specifically, the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper is currently listed at 7,379 USD/ton; while the price of Muntok white pepper remains at 10,062 USD/ton.

The Malaysian market remained stable, with ASTA black pepper trading at $9,200/ton and ASTA white pepper at $11,900/ton.

The Brazilian market has not fluctuated much, pepper prices here are currently being purchased at 6,650 USD/ton.

Vietnamese pepper prices continue to move sideways and remain stable, with 500 g/l black pepper having an export price of 6,700 USD/ton; 550 g/l reaching 6,800 USD/ton and white pepper currently being offered at 9,700 USD/ton.

“Pepper prices remain high but there is no breakthrough, mainly due to weak domestic purchasing power and farmers’ waiting for prices to increase. Trading activities are also slow as export enterprises remain cautious about international developments.”

However, the medium and long-term potential of the pepper industry is still optimistic due to the global supply shortage that has not been resolved. Some large markets such as China have begun to re-import goods, although the scale is not large, but it shows signs of recovery gradually becoming clearer.

Meanwhile, the domestic pepper industry is also facing increasing competitive pressure from countries such as Indonesia and Brazil, which are accelerating production expansion and investing heavily in the supply chain. According to experts, to maintain its export position, Vietnam needs to step up processing and build a more recognizable brand in the international market.

Preliminary data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA) shows that in the first 15 days of May 2025, Vietnam exported 10,594 tons of pepper, reaching a turnover of 74.6 million USD, a slight increase of 1.7% in volume and 3.6% in value compared to the first half of April.
