Durian price news today 05/22/2025
On May 22, 2025, China is making headlines for its push into the durian processing industry with its first factory on Hainan Island, expected to be operational by June. According to Hainan Daily, the factory is operated by Hainan Youqi Agricultural Company, which owns more than 800 hectares with 210,000 durian trees, affirming its position as China's largest producer. With an area of 4 hectares, the factory is divided into modern functional areas such as fresh fruit sorting, processing, dried durian production and cold storage, along with a livestream studio to promote online sales - a booming trend in this country.
In the first phase, the factory will focus on processed products such as moon cakes, ice cream, dumplings and frozen rice, promising to meet growing domestic demand. Notably, the operation time coincides with the peak harvest season in Hainan, helping China gradually complete its domestic supply chain, reducing its dependence on imported durian from Thailand and Vietnam.
This development has both opened up opportunities and posed challenges for Vietnamese durian. As the second largest supplier to China, Vietnam still has an advantage if it maintains quality, improves logistics and diversifies processed products. However, with China’s strategy of “localizing” durian, competitive pressure on prices is inevitable.
Experts say durian growing areas in Vietnam need to quickly upgrade their raw material areas to meet GAP standards, invest in post-harvest preservation and participate in the processing chain to maintain their position in the Chinese market in the future.
