Steel price today May 27: Plunging due to supply - demand pressure...

Steel prices in the domestic market remained stable today. However, in China, iron ore prices traded on the Dalian Commodity Exchange fell to their lowest level in two weeks, negatively affected by weak steel demand and a gloomy outlook for the real estate industry.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), rebar prices for October 2025 delivery fell 8 yuan to 3,009 yuan per tonne.

Iron ore futures also recorded a downward trend as steel demand in China – the world’s largest market – continued to weaken. The prolonged gloomy situation in the real estate sector is weakening confidence and trading sentiment in the raw material market.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 2.21 percent to 706.5 yuan ($98.47) a tonne.

Earlier in the session, the contract price hit 704 yuan, the lowest level since May 12.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark iron ore contract for June delivery (SZZFM5) fell 1.09% to $97.05 a tonne.

Meanwhile, Galaxy Futures commented that prolonged difficulties in the construction and real estate industries are putting great pressure on domestic steel demand.

China’s property slump is expected to continue this year, with home prices set to fall nearly 5% in 2025 and struggle to recover in 2026, according to a Reuters poll.

However, the dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against a basket of six major currencies, fell 0.3% to 98.813 - extending a 1.9% decline from last week.

A weaker dollar makes assets priced in the currency, including commodities such as iron ore, more attractive to buyers holding other currencies.

Input materials for steel production on DCE also decreased simultaneously; in which coking coal and coke (DCJcv1) decreased by 1.96% and 1.72% respectively.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, prices of key steel products continued to fall sharply. Rebar lost 1.67%, hot-rolled coil fell 2.03%, wire rod (SWRcv1) plunged 2.58%, while stainless steel edged down 0.04%.
