In the first three months of 2025, the total global pepper import volume reached more than 80,600 tons. Compared to the same period in 2024, this figure decreased by 8.1%, but still increased by 6.1% compared to 2023. This statistic was cited by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) based on ITC data, but did not include data from Vietnam.
The US continues to be the largest pepper importer, accounting for 26.8% of the global market share with more than 21,500 tons, up nearly 9% over the same period last year. India follows with an impressive increase of nearly 46%, reaching over 10,600 tons. Several other major markets also recorded significant increases such as Germany, France and especially China - where imports doubled to nearly 2,000 tons.
Although the pepper harvest season has ended in Vietnam, there are still no official statistics on output. Many signs indicate that this year's output is likely to decrease due to prolonged drought, especially in the Central Highlands and the Southeast, two key pepper growing regions.
Pepper price today May 28 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on May 27 (local time) as follows:
Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices increased slightly compared to yesterday at USD 7,470/ton (up 0.51%). In addition, Muntok white pepper prices also remained unchanged compared to yesterday at USD 10,185/ton (up 0.5%).

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,700/ton.
Pepper prices in the domestic and international markets are currently moving in opposite directions. This clearly reflects the imbalance between supply and demand as climate change affects productivity, while the market has not shown strong signs of recovery in demand.
In the short term, purchasing prices are forecast to fluctuate within a narrow range. This trend depends largely on the export speed and inventory levels of processing enterprises as well as foreign traders.
However, according to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), world pepper prices remain high due to limited post-harvest output, while demand in major markets such as Europe, the Middle East and China shows signs of improvement. In this context, Vietnamese businesses are adjusting their strategies, looking for niche and less competitive markets. At the same time, they are also tightening quality control processes to meet increasingly stringent requirements from high-end markets.
