World oil prices
According to the record at 11:30 a.m. (Vietnam time) on the oilprice website, the price of WTI oil decreased by 0.24 USD/barrel, equivalent to 0.38%, to 62.99 USD/barrel. Meanwhile, the price of Brent oil also decreased by 0.3 USD/barrel, equivalent to 0.45%, currently trading at 66.33 USD/barrel.
According to Reuters, new data from the American Petroleum Institute showed that US crude oil inventories increased by more than 4.28 million barrels in the week ending May 9, completely contrary to the previous expectation of a decrease of 2.4 million barrels. This information put pressure on WTI oil prices.
Analysts said the US announcement of a 0.2% increase in the CPI in April eased concerns about inflation and helped reduce pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. This raised expectations that borrowing costs would not increase further, thereby supporting demand for energy consumption, including crude oil.
However, the oil price rally is being restrained by OPEC+'s planned production increase, which is expected to add about 411,000 barrels per day from May. In addition, Saudi Arabia - China's second-largest oil supplier - will also maintain high exports in June, after reaching a supply peak in more than a year last month.
However, many experts remain optimistic, saying that positive economic factors from the US, along with high demand for refined oils such as gasoline and diesel, will continue to support oil prices in the short term, although fluctuations due to global supply and demand are still factors that need to be closely monitored.
Domestic gasoline prices
Domestic gasoline prices on May 14 remained stable, unchanged from the most recent adjustment on May 8. According to information from the Ministry of Finance and Industry and Trade, the current retail prices are as follows: E5 RON 92 gasoline has a maximum price of VND 18,777/liter, RON 95-III gasoline does not exceed VND 19,179/liter. Diesel is being sold at VND 16,809/liter, kerosene is VND 16,941/liter, and fuel oil is priced at no more than VND 15,533/kg.
This price remains unchanged in the context of the world market having just experienced many strong increases. Previously, in the adjustment on May 8, the prices of all petroleum products decreased significantly. Specifically, E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by 377 VND/liter, RON 95-III decreased by 407 VND/liter, diesel oil decreased by 550 VND/liter, kerosene decreased by 623 VND/liter and fuel oil decreased by 665 VND/kg.
However, it is highly likely that domestic gasoline prices will increase again in the May 15th adjustment period, due to the impact of the continuous increase in the world crude oil market. The agreement between the US and China to temporarily cut taxes and the cooling of inflation in the US has boosted positive sentiment, causing WTI and Brent oil prices to rebound strongly in recent days.
Since the beginning of the year, domestic gasoline prices have been adjusted 19 times, including 9 decreases, 7 increases and 3 opposite fluctuations. Flexibility in price management helps to control and stabilize the domestic market in the face of fluctuations in global energy prices.
