Expectations for the new book series
On December 10th, the National Assembly passed the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Education Law. Accordingly, an important new point is that the whole country will use a single set of textbooks.
Sharing his expectations for the new textbooks, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Bac, a teacher at Lam Thao Primary and Secondary School (Luong Tai, Bac Ninh ), emphasized the need for simplified, practical content that aligns with the spirit of the 2018 General Education Program.
The new curriculum requires the development of competencies, but some current textbooks are still too knowledge-heavy and full of unnecessary details. The new textbooks need to be concise, focused on core concepts, reduce academic knowledge, and increase activities and practical situations to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teacher Nguyen Phuong Bac also expects the new textbook series to have a coherent and unified structure across subjects. Specifically, a textbook series should have a common philosophy, standardized terminology, and consistent symbols, avoiding the situation where each textbook uses a different way of expressing things, causing difficulties in interdisciplinary teaching.
In addition, increase the use of visual aids and accompanying digital learning materials (with QR codes) by integrating videos , simulations, digital resources, virtual practice exercises, etc. Having an open and easily accessible learning materials system will reduce the burden of teachers having to create everything themselves.
Textbooks should also be written in an open-ended way – encouraging creativity. Accordingly, lessons need a core framework, but the activities should be designed to be open-ended so that teachers can flexibly adjust them according to the region and characteristics of the students.
Carefully study the program's "guiding principles."
To best prepare for the implementation of the new textbooks, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Bac believes that teachers need to proactively study the 2018 General Education Program – this is the true "guiding principle"; and at the same time, familiarize themselves with new lesson formats and competency-based assessment methods.
Teachers also need to review and update their personal teaching materials by updating lesson plans and learning resources so that they are not entirely dependent on textbooks; standardize question banks and open-ended activities for flexible use.
Simultaneously, enhance active teaching skills and AI technology: Utilize Canva, PPT, simulation software, Quizizz, Liveworksheets, etc.; use teaching equipment effectively and save time.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Bac, teachers want to participate in in-depth training sessions, avoiding formality, in order to effectively implement the new textbooks. The training content should be organized by topic, closely following real-life teaching situations; include illustrations with model lessons and post-lesson analysis; reduce theory and increase practice, avoiding passive lecturing; and provide complete accompanying learning materials.
In addition, training activities need to develop a standardized system of worksheets, a bank of illustrative questions oriented towards competency development, and synchronized, easily accessible digital learning materials. Along with this, it is necessary to establish regular support channels, form online professional groups by province and cluster for teachers to exchange ideas and ask questions; and organize forums to promptly address difficulties encountered during the use of textbooks.
Regarding this matter, Ms. Tran Thi Bich Hanh, Principal of Ha Hoa Town Primary School (Ha Hoa, Phu Tho), believes that teachers need to grasp the principles of developing a unified set of textbooks, which is expected to inherit the advantages of existing textbooks and ensure minimal disruption to teaching and learning activities.
If the new textbooks are designed with a reasonable balance of continuity and improvement, teachers will become familiar with the structure and teaching methods, and quickly grasp the new features and improvements in the new textbooks for teaching during the school year.
During the transition period or when a new set of textbooks is implemented, managing, ordering, and sourcing the correct textbooks will require careful attention to prevent students from having to purchase them themselves, which could lead to the risk of buying pirated books.
