Teachers and students are working hard to eradicate illiteracy.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai , by the end of 2024, the entire Gia Lai province (old) will maintain and improve the results of achieving illiteracy eradication standards (IELs) when 100% of district-level units meet standards from level 1 or higher; of which, 15/17 districts meet IELs standards level 2, achieving and exceeding the planned targets set for 2025.

The results show the active participation of the entire political system in implementing the Project "Building a learning society in the period 2021-2030". Departments, branches, sectors and organizations have closely coordinated with the Education sector in developing plans, mobilizing learners, maintaining student numbers, and opening XMC classes suitable to the actual conditions of each locality.

In addition to teaching literacy, propaganda and mobilization work for people, especially ethnic minorities, is focused on. Many teachers, commune officials, and youth union members volunteer to teach, contributing to spreading the spirit of "each literate person is one more person whose door to knowledge is opened".

In the process of organizing XMC classes, Gia Lai province (formerly) not only teaches people to read and write, but also helps people realize the benefits of knowing how to read and write. From there, they are more proactive in working, producing, raising children and participating in social activities.

When she turned 62, Mrs. Kpuih H'Hai (Lung Prong village) prepared her books, pens and rulers in her bag to go to class to learn to read and write. When she was young, Mrs. H'Hai was sent to school by her parents, but only for 1-2 years and then stopped, so she became illiterate again.

"This time, I am determined to learn to read and write. Knowing how to read, I do not have to point but can sign documents and read information in books and newspapers. Good knowledge can be applied to life to develop the economy and improve people's knowledge. Not only that, I also set an example for my children and grandchildren to follow and strive to study and become useful people," said Ms. H'Hai.

Since childhood, Kpuih Phuoc was not as lucky as his peers to be able to go to school to learn to read and write. During the time when his friends were learning to read and write, he was busy with farming work, earning a living to take care of his family. He also wished to go to school, to learn to read and write so that he could read, write and calculate by himself. At the age of 40, his dream became a reality when he attended a literacy class.

Although he is busy with his farm, he always tries to arrange his work to go to class in the afternoon. He does not want to miss a single class because knowing how to read and write is his joy and happiness.

Students who were illiterate can now read and write fluently.

Implementing the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development for Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 Period, the People's Committee of Gia Lai Province (old) issued a plan to open 715 literacy classes, mobilizing more than 23,000 students to participate in the study.

As of June 2025, the entire Gia Lai province (old) has opened 255 classes in 17/17 districts, towns and cities with nearly 6,900 students. The classes are organized flexibly in terms of time and location, creating favorable conditions for people to participate in learning, especially the elderly or those who are busy making a living.

Along with that, professional training for the team of XMC teachers has also been systematically implemented. The Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai (old) organized training for 119 managers and key teachers on the XMC program, aiming to improve teaching capacity and skills in organizing classes suitable to regional characteristics. It is expected that in 2025, the second phase of training will continue for teachers according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, said: The locality has determined that illiteracy eradication is not only the task of the education sector but also the responsibility of the whole society. Maintaining and expanding these results requires the cooperation of all levels and sectors, especially the local authorities and the team of teachers directly teaching in the classroom.

In the coming time, the Gia Lai Education sector will continue to synchronously implement propaganda solutions, thoroughly grasp and effectively implement the directives and resolutions of the Party and State on universal education and illiteracy eradication. At the same time, strengthen the leadership role of local Party committees and authorities in maintaining, inspecting and supporting classes.

The XMC work is also linked to the emulation movements to build new rural areas, develop a learning society, and encourage learning and talent at the grassroots level. Collectives and individuals who have made many contributions to the XMC work will be commended and promoted to create a spreading effect in the community.

Thanks to the attention and synchronous coordination from the provincial to grassroots levels, the work of eliminating illiteracy in Gia Lai does not stop at teaching people to read and write, but also arouses the spirit of lifelong learning - an important foundation for people in disadvantaged areas to strive for sustainable development.
