Mrs. Nguyen Thi Luyen's household in Mac village, Yen The commune is one of the households participating in the project on disease-free zones for Newcastle disease and avian influenza in chicken flocks, which has been implemented for many years.

With a scale of raising 4-5 thousand chickens per batch, Ms. Luyen considers disease prevention a vital factor. Participating in the project, her family was equipped with knowledge, skills and strict disease prevention procedures. Recently, the price of chicken has increased sharply to 82-85 VND/kg, bringing high profits, making her pay more attention to safe herd restoration.
According to Ms. Luyen, as soon as she brings in a new batch, she fully implements the quarantine process, cleans the barn, and vaccinates. For her, raising livestock is not only a job but also a responsibility to the community in maintaining a disease-free area.
Since 2022, Yen The district (formerly Bac Giang province) has been granted a certificate of avian influenza and Newcastle disease-free zone by the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), becoming the first locality in the North and Central regions to meet district-level standards. To maintain this achievement, every year, specialized agencies coordinate with local authorities to vaccinate all chicken flocks, monitor diseases, and take samples to check post-vaccination effectiveness.
Yen The commune was merged from 5 communes and towns including: Phon Xuong town and Dong Lac, Dong Tam, Tan Hiep, Tan Soi communes. These are also communes recognized as disease-free establishments under the previous Disease-Free Zone Project. Therefore, the local government clearly identified the task of maintaining disease-free zones as the top priority for sustainable livestock development and economic promotion.
According to the representative of Yen The commune, in order to be certified by the Department of Animal Health as qualified to maintain a disease-free zone, the specialized agency coordinated with the authorities of the communes in the disease-free zone to randomly take about 1,700 samples from livestock households in the area for testing. As a result, the samples were negative for avian influenza virus and Newcastle virus. At the same time, 10 million doses of avian influenza vaccine and more than 30 million doses of Newcastle disease vaccine were vaccinated. At the same time, 4,500 liters of chemicals were distributed, and livestock households proactively funded the purchase of an additional 20,000 liters of chemicals and more than 200 tons of lime powder to serve the sanitation, disinfection and sterilization of the livestock environment...
Currently, the price of commercial chickens is high, many households are restocking their flocks to serve the market. This is also the time to prepare for the changing seasons, the risk of disease outbreaks, and the resistance of livestock is reduced. To maintain a disease-free area, creating a protective shield for poultry flocks, the Department of Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries (Department of Agriculture and Environment) recommends that farmers strictly follow the recommendations of specialized agencies; closely monitor market developments, determine the scale of restocking, increase the flock appropriately, and ensure the best production efficiency. Pay attention to quarantine issues, and ensure the use of breeding stock with clear origins.
