This is the 11th package of sanctions by the 27-member bloc aimed at Moscow. The sanctions package is aimed at preventing third countries and businesses from "evading" the current EU sanctions.
Sweden, which holds the rotating EU presidency, said the sanctions package includes provisions banning the transit through Russia of goods and technology that could be used by the country's military or support its defense and security sectors.
In addition, the sanctions package allows for restrictions on the sale of sensitive dual-use goods and technologies to countries that may resell them to Russia and expands the list of restricted goods.
In order to prevent Russian crude oil or petroleum products from being loaded at sea to evade EU sanctions, the new sanctions package will ban suspicious vessels from docking in EU countries.
The measures also extend the suspension of the licenses of five Russian media outlets to broadcast in Europe, and add 71 individuals and 33 entities to the list of individuals whose assets are frozen in the EU.
Since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, the West has imposed a series of sanctions against the country.
The head of Russia's Central Bank said in April 2023 that the series of sanctions was stronger than expected but the country's economy remained resilient.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 16, President Putin assessed that the Russian economy has positive prospects, with a forecast of a 2% increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year.
